Former U.S. Tennis Association top executive Arlen Kantarian has been hired as senior adviser to Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross for all commercial aspects of the team, sources said.

The role is not full time, however, and Kantarian is still considering other job options, the sources said. Kantarian declined to comment.

According to the sources, Kantarian is looking to bolster the Dolphins brand the way he did with the U.S. Open. With the Dolphins, his role will include commercial interests related to both the team and year-round programming for Dolphin Stadium. In addition to the Dolphins, the facility is home to the Florida Marlins, is hosting World Baseball Classic games this month, and will host the NFL Super Bowl and Pro Bowl next year.
Kantarian has already been at work with the Dolphins, sources said, bringing in a new ad agency and participating in several naming-rights meetings for the stadium.
For the most part, this really isn't big news regarding the everyday fan. However, the last part of the story is. Looks like the stadium won't be called "Dolphin Stadium" for long. Looks like a Sponser name.

it's a good thing IMO.

a simple and easy to bring money into the franchise. While most of us fans only worry how things fit under the cap, there is the very real aspect of where the millions of dollars that these guys sign for comes from....if the only source were us the fans, ticket prices would just go up and up and the insane rates that the players contracts do. Not to mention all the other ever increasing costs of doing business.

While I like the idea of having the stadium named after the team, it isn't very practical if a company is willing to pay millions to have their name on it.

I can only wish that such a company would have similar interest in the naming rights to my house.

The stadium should be called Joe Robbie Stadium, plane and simple. It should have never been changed.

easy for you to say....but if you had tons of money thrown at you for the naming rights of something like a stadium or field, would you turn it down?

No, but i think it's worth the loss to honor the founder of the franchise forever and ever. You wouldn't see the Packers sell out Curly Lambeau.

unique situation....they are owned by the fans. if they were sold to a private investor I bet you would.

I agree that it helps take finacial pressure off of us the fans. The problem however is that its not like there is a profits cap for teams to collect. They will charge everyone as much as they can get away with. It really does not transulate into less expense for the fan as much as it does to larger profits for the owners and players. I think it is a positive thing though.

woot woot hes armenian :)

and we had an armenian FG kicker as well in the 70's.

It wouldn't be easy under this economic microscope to attract a big buck naming rights sponsor who is NOT accountable to its shareholders, or even worse, the government so I don't see this happening imminently.

In the meantime, this would be my recommendation:

Don Shula Field at Dan Marino Coliseum. That has a nice ring to it.

I think a classy move by any organization that buys that naming rights would be to include Joe Robbie in the name somehow. Its not like they'd be competing against him for business or anything, and its pretty common to find names such as Company X Field at Joe Robbie Stadium, or Joe Robbie Stadium sponsored by Company X. Just my 2 cents...

Woah my Photoshopping friend, lets not go Dennis Green and crown him just yet.

He's got to bring the hardware to Miami first. :D
