KC Joyner (ESPN) on Miami's O-line

I asked the following question to KC Joyner on ESPN insider about the dolphins o-line. I was not too pleased with his answer.

Brian (de): How is Miami's O-Line shaping up with the additions of Long and Smiley to go with Carey and Sataele? Still one hole.

KC Joyner: (4:57 PM ET ) Two holes if you count Smiley as a hole in pass blocking. He did a terrible job last year on that front, which is another reason Miami isn't likely to put the ball in the air very often next year.
 
He does those football metrics where he basically watches tons of tape on every player and puts out books of info showing how all individuals do in certain situation.

Honestly I don't know who that guy is, but isn't it regardless anyway to know what that dude says about our line?. Hopefully we would make it better than he thinks...

I like the additions we have made there.
 
Well before last year Frank Gore ran pretty well behind that Oline... And the 9ers were pretty bad last year overall so i wouldnt put the blame all on Smiley for there poor passing. He also had a rookie RT Joe Staley next to him so he had to pick up the slack...
 
smiley was injured last year.

he admitted it effected him way more than he let on
to the coaching staff.

he said in hind sight, he should have come out of more
than a few games but he is a warrior and a competitor
and his pride won over. aqnd i like that!!

and really, the coaches and trainers should have had him
come out as had to see his play was off. or were they not
able to read ther own player? did they not talk to there
trainer?

i like the signing. and this writer is WAY off base about his
pass blocking. EVERY o-linemen is better at one aspect,
run or pass blocking. but if smileys pass blocking was so
attrocious that the fins wont be able to pass much, parcells
doesnt sign that guy.

just more talking out of the wrong orafice by another stupid
media hack.

to add to this great point, what about the whole post-Norv disaster that the niners offense became? they had a horrible OC last year which as the Raiders evinced under Art Shell can ruin everybody's play

I would bet that Smiley pass blocking was alot better when Norv was the OC

Smiley may be a poor pass blocker, but I tend to beleive the O-line gets better as a group. In other words, the surrounding O-lineman can make a porr pass blocker or run blocker that much better. Look at the Colts O-line. It seems that no matter who you plug in there they seem to get the job done.

I agree completely. The O-Line is one cohesive(sp?) unit. With all the rookie and 2nd year guys we have, it's a golden opportunity for a line guy (Sparono) to mold them into 5 pro-bowlers. I like what they will do this year, but I love what they will do the next year! When Bill talks about putting a system in place, this is it. This is trench warfare and whoever has the biggest tank wins. Go Phish!
 
So Smiley run blocks a HELLUVA lot better than pass blocks - makes me happy...
 
There are some legitimate question marks with Smiley. Most of the time he is an excellent pass-blocker. However, he plays a little off-balance sometimes, and falls to the ground too often (in these instances, he's not a very good pass-blocker when he's lying on the ground).

Smiley's run-blocking statistics aren't that great. However, you frequently see him get to the second-level and block a linebacker. This mobility is something that Hadnot did not have. Smiley is better than Hadnot, but by how much is yet to be determined; he's not a pro-bowler, though.

With 1-year players Mormino and Esera, and rookies Thomas and Murphy, competing with Smiley... I am pretty comfortable with our situation at Guard.

If all 4 of these young guys fail, then maybe we sign a veteran guard after the June 1 cuts. Maybe we bring back Liewinski. I feel pretty good about the guys we have, though.
 
Who the hell is KC Joyner. Has he every played or coached the game before? Because if not, I could give two sh*ts what he thinks.
 
dont know another offensive line with this much young talent in the league
