I thought this guy was kind of interesting. Sort of the Billy Beane(Athletics GM, Moneyball) approach to Football. This is from a chat on ESPN Insider. If you want to know more about his "system", check out thefootballscientist.com. I don't necessarily agree w/ him, but like I said, I thought his take was interesting.

"Joyner, AKA the Football Scientist, uses game film to track, tabulate and analyze nearly every measurable statistic in an NFL game"

Josh (NYC): based on your projections...What is that status of the Miami Dolphins OL? Thanks

KC Joyner: It could be a tremendous line. I wasn't high on the signing of LJ Shelton (has LJ rated 69th among tackles) but I very much like the signing of Bennie Anderson.
Anderson ranked 26th among guards in modified YPA and was 6th in success percentage.

On a related note, Seth McKinney ranked 17th in the overall linemen numbers and was 3rd among centers. If
Anderson plays as well as last year and Shelton can improve to being even just a solid LT, they have all of the other pieces in place.

nice, so what do you say now to all those bill fans that mis-informed us on BA and told us we were making a humiliation of ourselves!!???

Nothing, because Anderson played horrible from what I saw last year. What do you say to people who don't like McKinney and think Shelton is solid?

You can have 5 different opinions on a players abilities and such from 5 different people. All that really matters is how well he is motivated to play up to his ability here and how well he produces HERE. It's not about what he's done or hasn't done in the past. It's about how well he does from this point forward.

well would you go as far as saying that its a humiliation to the oraganization to sign the guy and takes us out of playoff contention like some bills fans?? i know he had an off year but the guys a vet, hes coachable and he did have solid years with the ravens in the past, the point is the whole buffalo line sucked and yea BA was a result to it but he can certainly contribute if he plays how he did for the ravens

That's interesting because Anderson was a penalty machine in Buffalo.

This guy seems to have done a lot of filmwork. I don't think Mckinney is as good as he has him rated. Saban doesn't seem to think so either as he is trying to replace him. I also don't think that LJ is that bad. I form my own opinions based on games and tapes of games I watch. The problem is that they are network games and follow the ball except 4 the few replays that focus on an individual. Even if u attend the game, u don't watch 1 player the whole time. So, unless u r able to get REAL game tape it is nearly impossible to judge an indvidual O lineman. And, just b/c Anderson was a "penalty machine" last year doesn't mean he will be this year. I just thought that this guy had an interesting take on the subject based on his statistical use, as opposed to others who throw out opinions based on word of mouth. Let's face it, that's a bad way to form an opinion, and it dosen't take any sort of football I.Q.

Yeah, think I remember seeing a news segment on this football scientist guy last season.
He's one of the bean counters that provide all the trivia, and semi- meaningful stats about players and positions that the sportscasters drivel out during games (hence the truckloads of game footage at his disposal).
Thing is, this guy's take overall would lean to one of discredit.
With LT being the most crucial/expensive, position/signing of any of the Oline's acquisitions this offseason, his ranking of 69th, meaningful or drivel, isn't much of a positive read.

like the verteran assemble of the Heat team doing mediocre in there selected squads and learned to play team under a good squad/coach, 2-2 BABY! i wonder if any phins were at game 4?

I gotta disagree w/ you on this not being a positive read Califin. He rates(acording to his "system") two players, who are not necessarily expected to contribute a great deal, very high, much higher than u would expect. And goes on to say that if LJ can perform everything else is in place. LJ decided on Miami b/c he thinks that Houck can get the most out of him. People have to remember that even though we spent a nice chunk of change on him he washed out in Arizona and Cleveland felt it necessary to upgrade in the offseason. Tackles are expensive. Look at the money Todd Wade got from Houston. I would like to know how Hadnot, James, Carey and McIntosh graded out using his "system", or if he even realizes that Mckinney's chances of starting this year are not very good.

Not sure where 69th places him, but I was under the impression the general consensus projected him somewhat higher. 69th almost seems to suggest we could have sombody else on our team he ranks higher..

Not that I'm putting much weight in his system, as I have plenty of confidence, Houck will see that he achieves that "solid" rating.

and I wasn't really crying. :cooldude:
