Paul Konerko decided to stay with the World Series champion Chicago White Sox, agreeing Wednesday to a $60 million, five-year contract.

The first baseman led the White Sox with 40 homers and 100 RBIs last season, hitting .283. He was MVP of the AL championship series win over the Los Angeles Angels and hit a grand slam in Game 2 of the World Series sweep over Houston, the first Series title for the White Sox since 1917.

A two-time All-Star, Konerko had an $8.75 million base salary last season, then became a free agent after the Series. Last offseason, Chicago decided not to discuss an extension.

Konerko will have some protection in the lineup till Thome gets hurt...

I'm glad he signed with the White Sox, there were some rumblings that the Red Sox were going to make an offer to him. Glad that never happened.

You didn't want him? HE's a MONSTER! The guy is awesome! Put him behind Ortiz and you wouldn't have missed a beat.

No thanks there are better ways the Red Sox can spend $60 million on, like pitching. Plus as of right now the Red Sox still have #24 batting behind Ortiz, and that's better protection than Konerko. Plus I don't think Kornerko is going to be worth the money in the long run.

Your nuts!

And Manny's gone and will be almost impossible to replace and Konerko is one of a very few select guys who could replace him.

Have fun with Olreude and Millar at 1B next year!

Have fun with Pavano and Wright in your rotation.

Forget the name calling for 2 seconds (tough for you I know). Your telling me you wouldn't rather have Konerko? Or do you agree with your fellow sox fan that Konerko is overrated.

Where is the name calling? I don't see it.

I'm not making a LONG term committment to Konkero for big money. I'm sorry, I don't trust a guy who hit (what, .230?) two years ago. Konkero is a good player, but he's not a superstar like you make him out to be.

There are better first basemen in baseball.

Your right we would be missing about 10 HR's and 40+ RBI. Konerko is ok, but not the answer for the RedSox. Would I rather have Beckett in 2 years or Konerko now... Beckett is the answer.

You can have all the offense in the world but if you pitching stinks you'll go nowhere. Both of our teams learned that last post season. Again as I say before I'd rather the Red Sox spend $60 million on pitching.

Manny is gone? Really? Which team is he on right now? It hasn't happened yet so you can't say that. I'm sure the Red Sox are planning on what to do if they finally do trade Manny.

And yes I'd rather have John Olreud and Kevin Youkilis platooning for a year or 2 and then go hard after either Adam Dunn and Mark Texierra who are free agents or by trading for them before they become free agents. Both are younger and in my opinion better options defensively and offensively.

YOU COULD HAVE HAD BOTH!!!!

As of right now Manny is still a Boston Red Sox. I've stated a million times that until the deal is official I'm not going to take any of these "Manny wants to leave" stories seriously. He guy has been saying that since 2001. This is old news. So again until he's off the team don't assume anything.

Another freakin dodger prospect. Man the dodger have devolped some players in the 90's
