He definitely has to improve in the penalty area...damn! 9 Penalties?

6 sacks allowed is about the average...not that bad when using some of the elite LT's in the league as a measuring stick. O.Pace has given up 15 over the last 3 years, Roaf allowed 14 over the last 3 years and J.Ogden allowed 15.50 over the last 3 years. W.Jones is an exception..he's a freak.

It should be said that McIntosh had 10 penalties and 9 sacks allowed before Houck's arrival....at which time it dropped to 5 penalties and 4 sacks allowed

The key is not in sacks allowed. I've always felt that was an extremely misleading statistic because the OL does not control whether or not his QB gets sacked, he controls whether or not he gets beaten, how often, and how long until he does on average.

The QB is the controlling factor in a sack. Some QBs see the pressure and get rid of it, some do not. Some can escape the pressure, some cannot.

What you want to see in Shelton as a measure of his success is to get an average time of sustained block, and average percentage of getting beaten.

If you just went by sacks allowed you're going to see a whole lot of untalented guys look to be about on par with guys like Pace, Jones, Ogden, etc. But that's just smoke and mirrors. When a QB gets sacked by the RDE that went up against Pace, Ogden, or Jones, he's genuinely surprised. They don't even bother splitting their attention that way. Their OCs don't bother sliding protection that way, and they don't bother installing short 3 step drops, draw plays, or screens to keep that RDE from pinning his ears back. In that way, you very well may see that the tackle only gets beaten one time the entire game, and that one time resulted in a sack. Before the season is done if you project those numbers out you've got a tackle that may have given up double-digit sacks, and people just looking at the sacks allowed figure are saying "oh he's washed up" or "he's no good"

But the truth of the matter is there are tackles that get beaten a dozen times a game, and their DE never even ends up getting one sack because the OC has limited the offense by going 3 step drops, draw plays, screen plays, sliding protection over, etc. The QB has developed a third eye to keep an eye on the pressure from that direction, so he gets rid of the ball quicker. In my experience, in outings in which Wade Smith did not allow a sack, it was mostly under these circumstances...because he was getting beaten a high percentage of time, and his average sustained protection time was poor.

Noticed on ESPN that SHelton was not one of the top 50 free agents. They miss something or did we?

That's just Len's list. You can only take it as seriously as you take him.

I think he's top 50, but I think a good number of Len's guys aren't top 50. The most glaring example is Chester Taylor.

I love it when people come out of nowhere, post a STATEMENT, not opinion....and they have ABSOLUTELY no explanation, stats, reference to bacl up there ridiculous waste of time.

These type of people don't know how horrible they make themself look.

i always thought shelton was a top ranked left tackle but it seems like in the last 2 years hes been looked at as a burdon with arizona really trying to get rid of him

Weren't we interested in Shelton last off-season as well???...

He's no upgrade. That is unless Houck can get him playing much better. Personally, I'm not too excited about this addition....

PHINZ RULE!!!

I just read on ESPN Insider that Shelton is ranked #83 in offensive tackles....yeap, this means there were 82 OT rated better than Shelton. He wouldnt even be in the top 50 for OTs!!!
