Did anyone see Chris Harry's "Inside the NFL" article? In today's paper (Orlando Sentinel)

Just an excerpt

Allow u to bypass the Super Bowl XL for few paragraps to focus on another big upcoming event on the NFL calendar.

On March 3, free agency commences for the 2006 season (33 days away)

Unless league owners and the players union can hammer out a new collective bargain agreement before then, the system for building rosters and signing players --as we know it-- will be impacted radically.

The 2007 season is the final year under the current CBA. Included in the agreement is a clause that states that a new CBA must be radified by March 2, 2006, or else the '07 season will have no salary cap. The mechanism was to serve as both a motivator to get a new deal done and deterrent to prevent the chaos that an uncapped year could bring.

Nobody wants it. The likelihood, however, looms large. League owners met in Orlando last week to address the issue. NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabe told the New York Times before the meetings that an agreement between the sides before the deadline probably wouldn't happen.. "We've just got a lot of issues that we can't get a breakthrough on".

No doubt we'll be hearing much more on this in the near future.........

They can amend the CBA to push the date back at any time before it runs out. The players' union doesn't want unrestricted FA either.

Should be interesting! I hope we don't lose the salary cap that would not be good. I hope the two sides come to an agreement.

i hope and think they will come to an agreement, the nfl isnt perfect, but its the best sport by fat in the usa, and dont think they want what happened to bball, basebell, and hockey to happen to them.

Maybe without a cap, Wayne would be let loose. He has the money to burn, and badly wants a championship in Miami. That being said, don't think the cap will go.

Although it would suck to lose the Salary Cap, Wayne Huizenga & Daniel Snyder would become the George Steinbrener of Football.

I think he might have learned from the marlins. when he bought that championship and was still loosing money on the team. plus i would not want to see a fire sale at the end of the year where every player must go.

They really need to start speeding things along with this if the Salary Cap was gone it would ruin the game of football IMO.

This situation would be way different than with the Marlins. Two of the most prominent differences being that the Dolphins bring in tons more cash for him, and contracts aren't guaranteed.

Even after it runs out, they can still amend it- after all, it's a contract and contracts can be changed any way that all the parties to the contract agree to. While the deadline does have some importance (in that it should serve as a wake-up call should it pass), it is more symbolic than real importance.

actually it would be bad for the nfl but good for the fins. Mr H and D. snyder would stock up on free agents.

Losing the salary cap would be horrid for the NFL. Every other Major sport hockey, baseball etc..have been trying to implement a salary cap forever.

This is disheartening because the FA/salary cap system we currently have is the best of all the major sports leagues. It allows for all the teams to share in the leagues' success and yet still be independent enough to generate monies in other fashions associated with the game. This needs to be resolved post haste, NFL players and owners...the ball is in your courts !!!

Preserve our game !!!

Yeah! We are definitely rooting for the right team if that were to happen. I think the Skins, Falcons, Cowboys, and Dolphins have the wealthiest owners.
