Did anyone see Chris Harry's "Inside the NFL" article? In today's paper (Orlando Sentinel)
Just an excerpt
Allow u to bypass the Super Bowl XL for few paragraps to focus on another big upcoming event on the NFL calendar.
On March 3, free agency commences for the 2006 season (33 days away)
Unless league owners and the players union can hammer out a new collective bargain agreement before then, the system for building rosters and signing players --as we know it-- will be impacted radically.
The 2007 season is the final year under the current CBA. Included in the agreement is a clause that states that a new CBA must be radified by March 2, 2006, or else the '07 season will have no salary cap. The mechanism was to serve as both a motivator to get a new deal done and deterrent to prevent the chaos that an uncapped year could bring.
Nobody wants it. The likelihood, however, looms large. League owners met in Orlando last week to address the issue. NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabe told the New York Times before the meetings that an agreement between the sides before the deadline probably wouldn't happen.. "We've just got a lot of issues that we can't get a breakthrough on".
No doubt we'll be hearing much more on this in the near future.........
