Height: 6'2"
Weight: 187-202
40 Time: 4.48
Positives:
LaRon Landry may be the best pure free safety in the nation right now. His coverage skills in center field are virtually second to none, and he hits surprisingly hard for his light size. He's also one of the few safety prospects in recent years who is a total ball hawk, flowing to the ball and the play better than the majority of defenders in the nation.
Negatives:
Landry's frame is a little smallish for the typical NFL safety, and some teams may try to make him gain weight so as to help improve his durability at the NFL level. He also sometimes tries to go for the big play instead of the sure thing, and that has created problems in the past.
Overview:
Ever since his debut as a freshman, Landry has been one of LSU's top defenders and has steadily risen up the ranks as one of the best defensive backs in the nation. He has improved every year and should become a solid free safety in the NFL for years to come.

So, are we thinking Jason Allen can become a full-time CB?

That's a strong probability. Certainly, FA will determine our draft play. But Landry helps our S position and Allen gives us the flexibilty for sliding him to CB.

Or, Allen and Landry are our S, with Bell as depth.

Either way, we improve our DB depth and talent with Landry, and it could be argued more so than picking a CB (Hall).

What about offense? There are some quality DB free agents on the market. But there are no quality free agents that play WR or QB. Why do we need to improve the strength of our tean, when we can barely score any points. If we do not improve the offense this offseason, then we are in for a long season next year.

I think O will be addressed this draft at least 3 out of the 6 picks should be O-side. Round 7 could make it 4 out of 6 picks.

However, our pass defense was not a strength this year. From week 1 thru week 17 it was our weakest aspect of our D - communication and assignment coverage errors. We dropped to many potential INTs.

Our D could really dominate if we strenghten our pass coverage allowing our DL more time to dominate, get pressure. Bottomline, our secondary pass coverage guys need additional talent to increase turnovers with improved play.

That said, yes, FA could change our Draft strategy for round 1. I think we target and sign 2 UFA's. CB and OLB/DE guy are the best chances but still long-shots to sign them!

Then I wouldnt be surprised to see our Draft shake out like this:

Round 1: S
Round 2: WR
Round 3: OL
Round 4: OL/QB/OLB-DE/or DT
Round 6: OL/QB/OLB-DE/or DT
Round 7: BPA or need not filled from above

A dominant defense will help the offense by giving us better field position. I would love to see us sign Adelius Thomas and draft Landry. I think you would see our defense go from one of the best to the best. Hell, you could use every other draft pick on offense for all I care.

Our offense was bad, yes, but we have the right personel IMO. We could use a LT and a speedy WR. We could get those in the 3rd/4th round. But as for Landry, I would love to have him---IF we played J. Allen at CB.

CB: W. Allen
SS: Bell
FS: Landry
CB: J. Allen

It really depends on the Defensive scheme and the coaching staff.

It's doubtful that a coach will spend a 2nd #1 pick on a safety in consecutive years even if it was someone elses investment. Spending that much on a 2nd safety is kind of a limited return, especially when there are so many other areas it could be used.

Jason Allen was rated by most people as a safety, and would probabaly remain that way in most defenses.

While I normally agree, I think that logic is only valid when the original pick has earned a starting spot. As much as I was confident in J. Allen, he never really locked down that safety position. I think Landry is a first year starter. He's an explosive ball hawk who played under a complicated defensive scheme. J. Allen can go back to DB, giving us much needed depth. Our secondary, clearly a need area, gets better in two spots with one pick.
