It would be helpful to have Larry Chester back. Tim Bowens was a beast and one of the best run-stoppers the Dolphins have ever had, but Chester blossomed into something impressive when he was here.

I know nothing of Chester's current status as far as contract and so forth, but with Keith Traylor likely stepping down it would be nice to have a large immovable force in the middle of the defensive line.

Chester was merely 'average' when he was here and went through 2 major injuries and some constant nicks. He's also been out of football for 2 years. Definate pass.

It's a new era.

Chester's injuries bother me. He wa fairly healthy until whatever happened to him in 2004. I remember him being not really 100% and injuring (or re-injuring) something early in the season. But it wasn't just Bowens who took part of that.

As another point (mostly a side point) I will mention I've always believed that Larry Chester and Morlon Greenwood were big reasons that Miami was one of the most difficult teams to run against for a few years (and again now). Unfortunately for Greenwood, he wasn't much of a "complete" linebacker. He was basically a defensive tackle trapped in a linebacker's body, which is unfortunate.

Wether we should get him or not is debatable(obviosuly only if hed take a min contract.) But to say he was just avearge for us is selling him short. He was a pretty darn good player for us, strongest man on the team i believe.

Larry Chester was above average, a plug in the running game. I don't like to hear this average talk, everyone on this board knew he was a reason for our success in the secondary because of our pass rush.

NFL | Chester trying to make a comeback

Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports former Miami Dolphins DT Larry Chester is trying to make a comeback. He suffered a major knee injury early in the 2004 season and was released last September. Agent David Levine said Chester is rounding back into football shape and is in the 340-pound range, which isn't much above his weight while playing with the Dolphins.

Bowens was the reason for the success. Bowens was the guy taking on the double teams. Bowens was the guy making the probowl on his run stopping alone. Chester was average all the way. He was with 2 teams prior to the Dolphins and neither team made any real effort to keep him and the dolphins signed him cheap originally.

The guy had nothing for a pass rush and gave the team exactly 1.5 sacks (in the same year) over 3 years. He never commanded a double team to take any pressure of Bowens. He was merely a 2 down run stopper which he was slightly above average as but considering he had zero ability at rushing the passer that makes him very average as a DT. He had constant weight issue battles with the team and he hasn't played any snaps since Sept 2004. Never were there any teams saying "man you gotta watch out for that Chester guy".

The guy was average. Face it.

LOL...I thought this was going to be about his weight problems...

I missread the thread title to be: Larry Chester is still ROUND! :D

Now that I know, I say if he can play and is healthy, I suspect Saban atleast invites him to camp for a look! If for nothing more than Rotational depth.

no.......he's been out of football for too long and i think we're better off grooming Manny Wright and bringing in a free agent like Grady Jackson for Wright to learn from.

I would not be opposed to giving him a chance. When he was healthy, he did a good job of clogging things up in the middle. He couldn't penetrate or rush the passer to speak of, but he sure could create a big log jam.

We have nothing to lose if we sign him to a veteran minimum contract with a few incentives.
