After the Dolphins signed Johnson last week, he made his preseason debut on Saturday night in a 17-13 defeat at Tampa Bay.
"I think they went really well," he said after a practice on Tuesday. "You know, got out there, just got my feet wet. I hadn't played since, geez …"
He paused while he tried to remember the last time he had. Johnson, once one of the most dominant running backs in the game during his years in Kansas City, played in just two games a season ago with the Redskins.
He was out of football for most of last season and most of the preseason, too, until the Dolphins signed him. A week into his time with the Dolphins, Johnson said the team is still identifying what his role could be.
"It's still up in the air because they haven't really put me out there to test me to see what I can and can't do," he said. "So hopefully this Thursday [against Dallas] they will be able to see what I'm able to do and kind of go from there."
Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said last week it's not guaranteed that Johnson makes the final roster and Johnson said he's taking nothing for granted.
"I'm not really comfortable," he said. "And I never can be comfortable. Because like I said – you never know. I didn't know I was going to get released in week two of last season."
