Forget the NFL-best 67.4 completion percentage, the seven interceptions that ranked second among full-time starters and the 7.7 yards per attempt that ranked ahead of Peyton Manning, Jay Cutler, Donovan McNabb and Ben Roethlisberger. Forget the second place finish in passer rating and the MVP voting.
The doubters will tell you that Chad Pennington did all of that last year … and in the season that starts Sunday, Pennington is primed for a fall.
To counter that assumption, you need a different sort of statistic.
How much of the offense did Pennington know, entering the 2008 season opener?
"I would say 75 to 80 percent going into the Jet game," coach Tony Sparano said this week. "And then it got better from there."
That's what many NFL observers have overlooked, while making dubious predictions for the Dolphins overall, and for Pennington in particular. Pennington essentially operated on the fly in 2008. It's hardly a coincidence that the Dolphins went 11-1 over the final dozen regular season games, after one of football's smartest men had some time to master the system and learn his teammates. It's hardly a stretch to assume that several more months of study and experience would improve his results.
He signed on Aug. 8, 2008, the night before the Dolphins' first preseason game.
"The first week Chad was here, honestly, we were drawing plays on paper and giving it to him when he was walking out of the locker room saying to him, 'Hey, don't forget this one, don't forget that one,'" Sparano said.
