Forget the NFL-best 67.4 completion percentage, the seven interceptions that ranked second among full-time starters and the 7.7 yards per attempt that ranked ahead of Peyton Manning, Jay Cutler, Donovan McNabb and Ben Roethlisberger. Forget the second place finish in passer rating and the MVP voting.

The doubters will tell you that Chad Pennington did all of that last year … and in the season that starts Sunday, Pennington is primed for a fall.

To counter that assumption, you need a different sort of statistic.

How much of the offense did Pennington know, entering the 2008 season opener?

"I would say 75 to 80 percent going into the Jet game," coach Tony Sparano said this week. "And then it got better from there."

That's what many NFL observers have overlooked, while making dubious predictions for the Dolphins overall, and for Pennington in particular. Pennington essentially operated on the fly in 2008. It's hardly a coincidence that the Dolphins went 11-1 over the final dozen regular season games, after one of football's smartest men had some time to master the system and learn his teammates. It's hardly a stretch to assume that several more months of study and experience would improve his results.

He signed on Aug. 8, 2008, the night before the Dolphins' first preseason game.

"The first week Chad was here, honestly, we were drawing plays on paper and giving it to him when he was walking out of the locker room saying to him, 'Hey, don't forget this one, don't forget that one,'" Sparano said.

Let them....if he was really as bad as people say, he wouldn't have been in NY for 8 yrs!

Yeah even NFL network was dogging on Chad in their season preview. Mayock also said he's nervous about Smith and Davis and commented about how the 2nd round pick beat out the first round pick.

Bottom line, if Atlantas defense is as bad as folks say it is Penney will pick them apart we all know that.

He just came off a real nice Pre-Season. Commiting no turn overs throwing for over 300 yrds and 2 TDS and I think he put the team in scoring position about 4 or 5 times.

This stretch consisted of almost all of the worst pass defenses in the NFL. If Pennington knew 80 percent of the playbook by week 1 then I think it's safe to say that he knew pretty much the entire playbook for pretty much most of the year. I can't see improvement coming because of that. I think a player like him would have mastered the playbook by midseason.

If he is going to improve this year I think it will be because of a better team around him and possibly a stronger arm if it is actually stronger this year.

Well since you credit last year to the poor pass defenses we were facing, then he is right on track this year when he faces Atlanta and Indy in the first two games. Atlanta secondary is horrible and has looked horrible all preseason. To th epoint they had to trade for first round bust and old castoff from Jacksonville who played safety all of last season.

As long as he is healthy Chad Pennington will win us some games this year that you wouldn't think we could win. It's been proven time and time again with mediocre jets teams, when healthy the guy wins games, period.

I love how Pennington, coming off an impressive season, is doomed to fail yet Brady, coming off a potentially career ending and certainly career altering injury, is destined to resume his greatness.

Rev KEV I like your pic, but I kinda like this one better.

Kinda looks like Ryan once Joey and JT get to him.

Well Brady has proven he can win the SB right? That's the difference right there

Well just add 'the league' to the exhorbitant number of members here who constantly underestimate him as well.

Penny is the most underrated Qb in League. Until Penny wins a SB he wont get the credit he deserves. Part of the problem has been his luck with injuries, the other part is everyone wants to make a big deal about his lack of arm strentgh yet last year with the recievers he has he was at the top with YPC. Does anyone here remember having a reciever on this team that got alot of yards after the catch, oh yeah Ginn, NOT!!!

His high yards per attempt is a product of a high completion percentage more so than throwing deeper passes and one of the reasons we don't get lots of yards after the catch is because of his arm.

I don't think he is underrated at all. He was the runner up in MVP voting last year. How can that be underrated?
