Before a crowd of 90,043 fans at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday night, the seventh-ranked Gator football team kicked off its 100th season in style with a 34-7 victory over the Southern Miss Eagles. The triumph increased UF's consecutive season and home-opening winning streak to 17, and improved Head Coach Urban Meyer's record to a perfect 7-0 in The Swamp. In addition, the 1996 National Championship team was honored during pre-game festivities in celebration of its 10-year reunion.

Senior quarterback Chris Leak (Charlotte, N.C.) was 21-for-30 for 248 yards and fired three touchdown passes, while senior Dallas Baker (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) had nine receptions for 123 yards and one TD. Making their respective collegiate debuts, freshman wide receiver Percy Harvin (Virginia Beach, Va.) gained a team-high 58 yards on four carries and caught three passes for 33 yards and freshman quarterback Tim Tebow (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored a one-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter on his initial carry.

i think the gators can be a team that can sneak up onto everyone in the top 5.i was impressed by leak even though it was southern miss but still he did well throwing the ball.he looks more comfortable.the recievers are looking god.Baker is a good target.but the one thing is we dont have an established RB.we played a bunch of different guys to see how they can do.

Leak did look more comfortable in the system. His one and only run, designed run anyway, really jumped out to me because he looked like a completely different runner than last year when he was just looking to slide ASAP.

I was very very impressed with Percy Harvin, kid is lightning in a bottle, he should be very exciting to watch for years to come. Old reliable Dallas Baker looked as good as ever as well. Secondary looked pretty good. Could use a better pass rush. Definitely need a RB to step up.

Yeah, I was there for my 1st student section game...place was rocking several times, esp. when Spurrier and Wuerffel were announced pregame, when Tebow scored, and the near pick-6.

I didn't like how the D got caught weak in the flats several times...but the D played well. Leak has a good pocket presence...and I thought the offense did a good job of spreading around running touches and passes. Could be an interesting yr.

By the way...any thoughts on me wearing Crimson in the student section on Sept. 30th? I was thinking that might be a bad idea...

I was happy to see the Gators win, But they still need to improve, But I guess the have another game to work out the kinks

i like tebow.ive heard good things about him being a great future QB

I was surprised how much Percy Harvin played in the opening game of his true freshman year.

I guess its hard to keep such a talent on the bench.

IMO the running game and the OL are a little suspect but they may get it together soon.

The OL is strictly experience related, the more they play together the better they will get. The RB situation however has been an issue for awhile, someone needs to step up. Plus the better the OL gets the better the running game will be.

Florida i need a lil help...Ur team looked good but Southern Miss isnt really a team to write home about....were yall satisfied with the team?

Tebow looked like he had some power when he went in for the TD.

Maybe they can use Tebow and Harvin in some RB plays to make up for the lack of talent back there. They are great athletes .You probably can do that in the spread offense.

Not really, But Southern Miss. is not a bad program and it seems to knock off great teams. They played Alabama last year and almost one. very close game. That was also the game with the great catch by Prothro

i was impressed by how comfortable leak was but we need an established running back.it will take a few games to see who that is:wink:

Southern Miss has made it to a bowl game 8 of the last 9 years. Not bad.

Sounds like Meyer has the same idea. Word is that Harvin will be in the backfield this week.
