LeBatard: Jason Taylor's pain shows NFL's world of hurt

In reality football is just a modern day gladiator sport with more strategy. It much like boxing in some ways shouldn't exist. We enjoy the big hits and seeing the guys sacrifice their body for our pleasure. Its a brutal sport and in some ways Im relieved that my son decided against playing even though he had the size and intangibles to be pretty damn good at it.
Im not sure in the end the money is worth it, but Im pretty sure if I were bigger and faster I would damn sure well like to have found out irregardless to my health. Many of these guys go onto very painful after football careers. I lead many guys that destroy their bodies day after day with beyond stupid weight being carried on their back for much less so what what do I know lol

Damn, Taylor (and Marino) are studs.

I love football, but I see why I stopped playing in college, 1) I wasn't good enough, 2) I love my body more than the game. I could never have given as much as these warriors gave. Kudos to them.

Great article....JT is the man.

Reading an article like this makes me a little queasy. When I realize it is my fandom that adds to the equation that makes men endure such pain, such brutal conditions, such a huge part of their lives, their future health, and longevity of life, just so I can enjoy watching them perform on the field on Sundays.

These men endure so much just to try and make us enjoy our team's success, only to read message boards where fans are calling them every name in the book when they drop a winning TD, or fumble a ball that cost our team the win. We have no idea what they are enduring just to win our approval and we are so quick to turn on them when they are not performing to our standards of excellence.

I see post on Facebook about "How is it a school teacher makes $40k (??) per year when a football player makes million just playing a game"? If they only knew.

well its still a messed up society that pays certain things millions of dollars while teachers make zilch but its a brutal blood sport for sure. They do it for the money and love of game pure and simple, money probably more so though.

Damn good article, don't realize what they go through. Although I think Taylor is a rare breed. Bunch of softies now a days

I dont think its about the money, hell here in Canada they still do it for much much less... Probably about the same as if they pursued their college career IMO..

This right here is what annoy's me about all the former players now suing the NFL. Although I feel for what they are going through, every single one of them more than once in their career's went back on the field when they were told they shouldn't. The knew what they there were getting into and they couldn't be told to stay off the field because of what the fans or their teammates would say, and because of their own pride. Now years later when the money is gone they complain they weren't told about concussions or they didn't know how bad the pain killers were for them.

Like Taylor said “Players play. It is who we are. We always think we can overcome.”

sorry, but if my line of work put me in a place where i couldn't even put my own kids to bed, it would immediately become my old line of work. I played halfway through my college career and said enough was enough, I, like Kcbrown wasn't quite good enough to make it to another level, maybe I didn't sacrifice enough. Or maybe the constant pain in my knees, upper back, and frequent headaches mean i sacrificed just the right amount to know when to walk away. Taylor was one of my all time favorites, regardless of position, but taking all of those medical risks with kids at home just wasn't worth any possible positive outcome.

I am in shock that he endured so much. He always seemed like he was the most active and fastest guy on the field. He is a man's man for sure. I hope most of his physical issues are behind him.
As other have said, I didn't have what it took to play college ball. I got my bell rung many times in HS and I also knocked another guy out during a tackle. My knees were hurting constantly. But you keep lining up.
The headaches and my lack of speed made the decision easy. That was 30 years ago. My knees are definitely causing me trouble as I get older, but like JT said, it was worth it.

****. I don't know about anyone else, but that made me tear up in places. Taylor is my all time favorite Dolphins player and knowing he did all that just to earn a pay check and entertain us. I am completely humbled.

I played the NFL game for over 9 years before I finally had to give it up. Although I don't have any of the horror stories JT has, the arthritis in my playing thumbs make it hard for me to even hold a controler any more. But just like JT to do miss playing...

Really? Wow man that's awesome. Mind telling us who you played for and when? I understand if you don't wanna share your real name. EDIT: Haha that went right over my head. Duuuuuh.

Good one....but did you win any championships on the Madden level before you were done?
