Let's chat: Mendoza vs Simpson vs Moore vs Sellers

There is not a clear 1 for QB that is the problem. The highest graded QB this year might be the 10th graded player on the draft or something like that. Reach reach reach. Just like Cam Ward.

I disagree.

Right now Mendoza and Simpson are top 10 overall prospects and either of the two would have went 1 overall in 2024, IMO.

If height is a top priority for a QB a person would miss out on guys like Steve Young, Russell Wilson, Drew Brees, and Joe Montana. None of these guys are 6’2”.

That’s not me saying that everything being equal I wouldn’t choose the 6’4” guy over the 6’1” guy, but it’s not something I’m overly concerned about.
What I prefer is a QB is net positive for the patterns, which I believe short QBs are not. I don't want lineman trying to create passing lanes because my qb "cannot see over the line". I want them just to block the guy they are supposed to be blocking, not worrying about blocking a particular angle because we a have smurf at QB.

I believe Young and Montana were both 6-2 (or at least listed at it). You're correct though I would have missed on Brees but he was an exceptionally rare player. Wilson, I recall even during his good years he had to move around for the lanes.

I also think due to offenses now being so horizontal that a bigger QB is needed. I see so many advantages to having the Marino, Kelly, Flacco, Allen's, heck even Lawrence's of the world.

I agree with a lot of this.

But, Young has joked about how he’s listed as 6’2” and he’s not that tall even with shoes.

I met Montana in KC back in 2009 at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House. I’m 6’2” and was a good bit taller than him. I doubt that he’s even 6’1”.

I don't personally see it with Mendoza...I like the size, but outside of that I'm not overly impressed. If we get him though, I'll be all the way on board.

I see Tua winning us a few more games this year though, so if we can grab Sellers with a later pick and let him sit for a year/develop, I would be thrilled.

Mendoza might have gone 1 last year. Simpson may have been graded higher than ward too. That does NOT make Simpson worthy of being the first overall pick

He just isn’t. Is he a guy that you’re gonna draw up designed runs for? No. But he can certainly scramble if flushed out of the pocket. I’d bet he runs at least a 4.7 40 or better at the combine.
he ran a 5.05 his senior year in hs. he's just not fast. he's joe flacco. joe ran a 4.84. mendoza is not going to be able to scramble in the pros

There’s just no way you can extrapolate how well someone ran in high school to how well they’ll run as a pro. Thats crazy talk.

Want an example? There was this kid who ran a 5.6 40 as a high school freshman. By the time he was a senior, he’d improved to a 5.0 40 time.

At the NFL combine, he ran a 4.75 40.

That kid is presently one of the most feared running QB in the NFL. His name is Josh Allen.

lol I'm literally watching Mendoza run like Joe Flacco against UCLA though. If you think Mendoza will be able to scramble in the NFL, I don't know what to tell you

Definitely. Height is rarely a concern for me. Tua’s issues aren’t height. To me it seems his body is just broken down and his once very average arm strength is now below and his innate and elite accuracy is suffering due to poor mechanics.
That’s because he doesn’t take proper care of his body, never has

I like Simpson he plays smart football. I can see him starting day one in nfl.

Okay. You should probably stick with that.
imagine thinking a guy who ran a 5.05 is going to somehow be scrambling a la justin herbert or Jaxson dart out there in the pros. grier, is that you?

He ran that in High School though. Most people are thinking he’s around 4.70-4.75 right now. Herbert ran a 4.68 at the combine. I suspect once he declares, and trains for the combine, he will be around Herbert’s times.

I don’t think Mendoza will be some fast scrambler, but he’s big and knows when to run. It’s kind of like Mahomes. Mahomes is slower than molasses, but no one will say he’s a bad scrambler. Mahomes ran a 4.8. That’s Tua slow.
