Anyone that thinks our o-line is set needs to wake up. Here are a few problems that the o-line still has:

RT: Vernon Carey is not that good (I personally think he is terrible, but I'll be nice). I know he signed a huge contract, but Miami really had no choice considering free agency was slim pickings for offensive tackles. Carolina resigning Jordan Gross gave Miami no options. Also, there is absolutely no depth at tackle if Jake Long or Vernon Carey get hurt. This is a huge problem that must be addressed.

LG: Justin Smiley is recovering from a serious injury and has a history of injury problems. And there is no depth at either guard position (sorry, I'm not sold on Berger or any of the back-ups).

RG: Donald Thomas is recovering from a season-ending injury and he has no NFL experience at all. No one knows for sure if he will pan out. All we can do is hope.

C: Jake Grove is a good player when he is on the field, but that is the big question - how often will he be on the field? And there is no legitimate depth behind Grove since Satele was traded.

Our o-line has a long way to go still. I would like to see a tackle, guard, and center selected in the 2009 draft. That's right, 3 o-linemen is what I'm hoping for. Let's use this draft to really fix the o-line and not worry about it anymore for years to come.

Most likely, the trifecta will take 2 o-linemen - a tackle for depth to groom as Carey's replacement such as Jamon Meredith in the 2nd round; and a center that can serve as a back-up at center/guard, maybe Antoine Caldwell in the 4th or something like that.

Not according to the vast majority here. They're all confident / satisfied with Alleman / Berger behind Grove. I'm not one of them...

IN TUNA WE TRUST....

I disagree with your opinion on Carey and apparently so does Parcells and Co. They don't pay Carey that kind of money or for that length of a contract if they don't think he's the long term answer. Miami did have options BTW.... they could have let Carey walk and drafted a OT in 1st or 2nd round.

i have no doubts that at least 2 O-Linemen will be selected in this draft...it's just a matter of what rounds will they be picked in...

Agreed... We cannot go into the season as a mauling offense without depth - injuries are part of the game... NE will not have too many possessions if we always have the ball...

I disagree on Carey. If he can keep his weight issues under control he is one of the best RTs in the league. It would be interesting if they put that into his contract or not.

I also would not be surprised or upset if we took Alex Mack in the second. He couls play guard (indeed, some teams are actually looking at him as a guard) and, given the injury history of both Smiley and Grove, it would be good to have starter quality depth behind the two of them.

With the rule changes that are in place the offensive Line is not that big of a priority. Even if they miss there blocking assignment the defender still isnt allowed to hit the QB so does it really matter if we have a good line up front.

May be the stupidest statement all year!

Actually, they were going to let Vernon Carey walk until Jordan Gross resigned with the Carolina Panthers. Finheaven was pretty much saying goodbye to Vernon Carey until Carolina resigned Gross. Next thing you know, a couple of days later, we hear an announcement that Miami resigned Carey.

I'm telling you, the Trifecta isn't sold on Vernon Carey. Considering the circumstances, they had no choice but to resign Carey. There was nothing available in free agency and letting Carey walk would open a another huge hole in the o-line and destabilize it even further. They are stuck with him for now.

with respect, you lost me at.....
"vernon carey isnt that good"

He's a damn fine RT and you know it.
I think the Offensive line is one of the least of our worries right now.
But I agree that we shouldn't assume it is set for a decade either.
I for one wouldn't be at all suprised if we took Duke Robinson at #25 !

However................... Don't worry as we will always take a lineman or two in the back end of the draft as a project.

I don't think the trifecta is done with this oline or the rest of the team. It's an ever evolving process.

I think we should understand this by now.

Actually, I think he is fat and lazy, and takes a lot of plays off. He plays good at times, and then he is awfull at times. His inconsistency is maddening. He is an underachiever.
