Okay, so I've been wondering.

Will cutting Suh, Pouncey, or Julius Thomas lead to comp picks?

I know with Pouncey we traded for another Center, but that's not really the same thing as signing one, right? (in the comp pick formula)

I don't understand how the formula really works but I'm hoping that an additional silver lining to some of our moves this offseason will be a few surprise comp pick for 2019.

Thoughts???

Nope. Comp picks wont be a factor for us. Released players dont count as free agents lost.

Got it, didn't realize it was so simple.

So, in other words, the reason we got comps picks for OV and Lamar Miller is they were signed away on expired contracts?

and to clarify, deciding not to re-sign Juan James if he was signed away could have possibly lead to one?

Ja'Wuan James is on his fifth-year option, so his contract doesn't expire until the 2019 season.

Only players who play through the entire contract and become free agents are counted toward that equation.

It's also counted on a money spent/money lost standpoint. OV signed for 5 years, 87.5M, so it would also take $87.5M in contracts for that to cancel out and no compensatory picks given. So even if Miami signed players totaling about $50M, they'd still likely get a compensatory pick because they lost more than they signed.

Players signed who were cut by other teams don't count toward that total.

Thanks! So, in terms of the Patriots are they playing the field for comp picks with the loss of Nate Solder, Dion Lewis, Amendola and more? Were any of them actually released?

None were released. All will could toward the formula, but they have signed some free agents too so we shall see how it plays out next year.

My guess is the Patriots get a 3rd and a 5th at least. I haven't really seen them signing free agents and Solder's contract was ridiculous

Suh, Thomas, and Pouncey were all cuts, we get nothing for cutting players. might get a late round pick for Bushrod depending on the size of his deal with the Saints.
