Let's Talk Football

Mr. Davenport,

What are you thoughts on the long term impact that 3rd overall pick Dion Jordan will have on our defense? In addition, how do you feel about his utilization this year (or lack thereof)?

I don't really have any issues using Jordan as a situational pass rusher in his first season; very rarely do pass rushers have success as rookies in the NFL. I think the route Jason Pierre Paul took is the correct one, and his 4.5 sacks his rookie campaign would be a good standard to hold Jordan to.

With that said, I disagree that Jordan is not seeing the field more in other roles. He could easily play a complete game as an interior linebacker, and in my opinion should be the immediate backup over Trusnik. Is he going to play there forever? No, but a coaching staff has a responsibility to put the best players on the field in a given circumstance, and they are missing the ball in several instances -- most glaringly with Jordan. From the combine data bank, I also know that he has the highest VO2 max of any player in his draft class, meaning he's in tremendous cardiovascular condition and could easily handle playing 70+ snaps if it was necessary.

Why is Jack Tyler out of VT ranked so low?

It pains me to say because VT is my alma mater, but physically he just doesn't appear to translate well to the NFL game. If he plays in the NFL it will be in a backup/ST role -- he just doesn't have the athleticism to make up for his glaring lack of leverage.

I guess he had a misfortune to play against Bama, they tend to make LBers look bad. Otherwise, I really like him.

Assuming all the top OL prospects come out, how many starting caliber LT's and RT's do you think there are? Or, if that's not something you want to answer here (which is cool) then what do you think about James Hurst of UNC and Brandon Scherff of Iowa? Are either of them starting caliber OT? Can either play LT? Are they end of the 1st early second rounders or is there a chance either will slide?

Thanks in advance, and good luck on the job-front.

GM, do you think RT17 is a Franchise QB or a Franchise caliber QB?

Good questions on all fronts, I also especially enjoyed your work on defending the read option.

To answer your initial question, when it comes to starting OL rookies, I always say there are as many starters as there are good line coaches in the NFL. I would say there are about a dozen players that could be considered day 1 contributors as is, and another 10-15 with the right scheme and coaching.

Hurst is an elite talent but will fall due to a medical red flag. Scherff projects as a guard at the next level to most that I've spoken with. If I were to target a late first round tackle it would probably be Antonio Richardson.

What's your view on building an offensive line from the outside in (starting with the tackles) versus inside out? The outside in method has been tradition in the NFL but my contention is that the proliferation of the spread offense has led to so much more A-gap blitzing that it's made the center the most important position on the line, with having great guards perhaps more important than having great tackles. Given that the Dolphins o-line is an emergency room wrapped in a clown car, where would you start in rebuilding it? For the sake of argument, let's assume Pouncey doesn't get indicted.
