Hi guys,

i just read an article of Pat kirwan on nfl.com. He says that, except J.Thomas and Levi Brown, the are few good OTs and several teams that are in desperate need of a left OT. He also said, that L. Brown will be picked very high in the upcoming draft based on the lack of quality OTs. Now i wonder why the fins said that they had no interest in L. Brown, but lots of interest in J. Staley.

Do they think Brown will be a reach at the 9th pick and Staley in the second round is the better option or are they trying to set up a smokescreen, because they want to draft him at 9 and they are scared someone will trade up to grab him before the fins pick him?

Is Brown worth the 9th pick? I would rather pick Landry at 9 and Staley in the second or third round.

well, I think your article says it in itself. Levi will be picked real high because of the lack of OT talent. I doesn't really say he will be picked that high because of his talent. Maybe Mueller just doesn't want to spend a 9th pick on a player that maybe should be going later on in the first except for the lack of talent at tackle. I can't be upset at that logic.

Although, it could very well be a smoke screen, and they could be salivating over the chance to pick him up. It's kind of hard to follow a college tackle, so I can tell you that I know nothing about him. Do you happen to have a scouting report link on him?

There´s an article on him at http://phinfever.com/. The other article is for subscribers only, but i try to copy paste it.

Levi Brown
T, Penn State War Room analysis
Run blocking: Excels at position blocks; locks on to his man, turns him out of the play and eliminates him. Must be more aggressive and drive his man off the line more consistently. Grade: 7.0
Pass blocking: When blocking with leverage and competing hard, is dominant. Sets up fast and punches defensive ends hard, locking them up and eliminating them. More often than not, blocks upright and stops feet after contact and ends up crossing over and chasing his man around the corner. Grade: 6.5
Initial quickness: Always is quick off the snap and moves in a flash. When blocking straight-legged, doesn't set up quickly or show good technique. Grade: 8.0
Strength: Is well-built and muscular. When working hard, is strong enough to torque pass rushers off their feet. With a good effort, can lock up and eliminate his man. Grade: 8.0
Mobility: Moves well but should be better. When blocking upright and straight-legged, cannot change directions quickly to adjust to moving targets. Grade: 8.5
Bottom line: Brown either will become a rock at left tackle or wilt in front of quarterbacks in the NFL -- it all depends on his willingness to work hard on every snap. He never will be a mauler who attacks and pancakes defenders, but he can use his elite athleticism to dominate in pass protection and be efficient in run blocking. Brown will be drafted high, but NFL coaches must be wary of his lacking aggressiveness. Brown will need a drill instructor-like line coach to help him become a solid NFL tackle.

Scouting news is not very high on him. They rate him as the 3rd best OT.

Yea, I agree that the scouting report didn't even make me smile. A lot of it says "when he works hard", which sounds like he gears himself up for a play or two and then just kind goes through the motions. Also when it talked about him stopping his feet often after contact, that tells me he's going to get killed by a dwight freeney type who hits you and then uses a great move or is fast enough to change directions. I can't say that I would be too happy with the pick after reading that, and I don't know if Houck is a drill instructor type, but if they think they can make him that dominant player that he flashes every now and then, than I guess I would just have to trust them.

It does sound like quite a risk for the 9th pick though.

I don't think that Miami will be making a pick at 9.

Who do they have at #2, Staley?

no, they have Tony Ugoh at Nr. 2, Harris at 4 and Staley at Nr.5 (Picked in the third round).

As i already mentioned, i think Landry will be the better pick, but you have to draft a solid left OT, because you simply can´t afford to sign one through free agency! You would have to break the bank for a mediocre LT! So maybe it is better to pick one (even if it is a bit of a reach) and sign him for a 5 or 6 year contract. If he can start in year two, you have saved a lot of money! I know, that goes for all positions, but LT seems to be particularly difficult ( at least to me).

By the way, Mel Kiper has Levi Brown at Nr. 11 on his Big Board!

Yea, and on his mock he has Brown going to Miami with the 9th, and he says that he has the potential to be an elite bookend. I guess that kind of goes with his scouting report though, with that comment about him being able to eliminate the defender "when he works hard"

I wouldn't be against a trade up if it's for a real difference maker, but I wouldn't like to give up to many picks. I think we're in a pretty good spot though, to either go up or down. I know we have two seconds, but if we had to give up our early second, than we practically have two thrids, cause the pats pick is third to last, right?

Right, but there is a lot of talent in this draft at need areas for Miami. That early third won't hurt that much. Look what Miami would be getting. Calvin Johnson.

In my opinion there are only 2 player worth trading up. C. Johnson and J. Thomas. But you have to trade up to the 4th or 5th spot to get one of them and that would be too much. I would probably consider trading picks with the bucs for J. Thomas, but not for our first and seconder this year. Iwould probably give up the 2008 first rounder.

Well from what I have heard and seen from Johnson I wouldn't be worried whatsoever of who we would get in the "early third" because we would have gotten arguably the #1 player in the draft. I would say that we would need to get to at least #3 for a shot at johnson. How far do you think he would still be there?
