not counting the rookie draft picks - here are some qb's that might be available - with commentary

Matt Shaub - Falcons probably not ready to let him go yet - will become a starter somewhere very soon though

Trent Dilfer - better option than Frerotte?

Favre - not really the direction we are going...plus..is he really willing to play somewhere else?

Seneca Wallace - not really excited about him..

Warner - has had his chances and can't get it done anymore

Kitna - probably more physically gifted than Frerotte - but he would be a better fit for a team that is totally rebuilding, not making a playoff run, Gus knows the offense

Pennington?? - I think the Jets will miss out on Leinart, therefore , Chad will be back next year

Harrington - will be starting somewhere next year, not miami though...Raiders maybe?

Aaron Brooks - his days as a starter are over..might make a good backup to someone like his cousin Vick if Shaub ever leaves town - Saints definitly in running for Leinart

Carr - not going anywhere

McNair/Volek - could see a Kitna/Vince young 1-2 there next year, could also try trading up for Leinart - McNair could be a good one or two year stop gap but he is way to injury prone, Volek makes too many mistakes

Garrard - I WANT THIS GUY!!! no doubt about it, none whatsoever - make it happy nick and randy

Culpepper - Arizona anyone?

Ramsey - this guy should get his chance somewhere

Brees/Rivers - not even gonna comment on either of these guys, not interested

Kerry Collins - he actually would make a very good 1 or two year guy, much better arm than Gus, but very mistake prone

schaub / ramsey are the top ones for me

You've got to realize that ideally Saban is probabaly going to end up grabbing a mobile player with a strong arm. A pocket passer or a guy suited for the West Coast Offense isnt going to fly.

Price dependent.... certainly an upgrade.

Trent Dilfer - better option than Frerotte?

Yikes. Probably better, but not enough to be worthwhile IMHO.

Favre - not really the direction we are going...plus..is he really willing to play somewhere else?

Can't see that happening.

Seneca Wallace - not really excited about him..

I have no opinion on him at all.

Warner - has had his chances and can't get it done anymore

Much better than Ferotte. He was actually having a pretty good year in Arizona. His completion percentage was 64.5 (!) and his YPA her 7.23. No idea why people think he and McNair are done, but Ferotte isn't. Cwazy.

Kitna - probably more physically gifted than Frerotte - but he would be a better fit for a team that is totally rebuilding, not making a playoff run, Gus knows the offense

I don't trust Kitna at all. He's had, really, one good year. Do i think he's an upgrade over Ferotte? Yeah, but not a signifigant one.

Pennington?? - I think the Jets will miss out on Leinart, therefore , Chad will be back next year

Depends on cost and health. He would be a huge upgrade.

Harrington - will be starting somewhere next year, not miami though...Raiders maybe?

Yikes.

Aaron Brooks - his days as a starter are over..might make a good backup to someone like his cousin Vick if Shaub ever leaves town - Saints definitly in running for Leinart

Marginal upgrade, IMO. I'd take it, but I wouldn't do cartwheels.

Carr - not going anywhere

Agreed. If he did, I'd take him.

McNair/Volek - could see a Kitna/Vince young 1-2 there next year, could also try trading up for Leinart - McNair could be a good one or two year stop gap but he is way to injury prone, Volek makes too many mistakes

McNair's only missed 13 games in 9 years. I don't know what his current status is, but he would be a real upgrade and I'd be excited about it.

Garrard - I WANT THIS GUY!!! no doubt about it, none whatsoever - make it happy nick and randy

haven't seen him enough to really judge.

Culpepper - Arizona anyone?

Take him in a heartbeat if doctor's clear him.

Ramsey - this guy should get his chance somewhere

Don't like his interceptions. If Saban thought he could lower those...

Brees/Rivers - not even gonna comment on either of these guys, not interested

Either in a heartbeat, depending on cost. Either of these two might be our quickest path to the big game. Still wouldn't sell the future to get them.

Kerry Collins - he actually would make a very good 1 or two year guy, much better arm than Gus, but very mistake prone

I'd rather have Brad Johnson. I've never liked Collins.

Matt Schaub - Falcons won't give him up, but anyways... he doesn't fit our system. He is a perfect west-coast-offense QB

Trent Dilfer - "better option than Frerotte?" NO.

Favre - May retire, plus... 28 INTs this year

Seneca Wallace - I really like him, but he doesn't have the arm strength to excel here

Warner - Has done a nice job with Arizona, but he's no better than Frerotte at this point.

Kitna - Hasn't played much for a few years... no better than Frerotte at this point

Pennington - Coming off of a really bad arm injury with a past history of it? No thanks... and he won't be cut from NY anyways... they'd take too big of a cap hit.

Harrington - NO.

Aaron Brooks - Waaaaay too inconsistent

Carr - Probably won't be leaving. He's got all the raw talent in the world, but hasn't put it together yet.

McNair/Volek - No and no.

Garrard - No way they trade him for anything less than a 1st or 2nd round pick.

Culpepper - Not going to be cut.

Ramsey - A possibility, but he's really struggled when he's had his chances in Washington

Brees/Rivers - Too much to give up for either of them.

Kerry Collins - NO. No better than Gus. He actually reminds me a lot of Gus.

Thus McNair and McCown are good candidates available for no picks...

I'd take Culpepper IF, and only IF he has recovered from his injury. He knows Linehan's system and McMike and Chambers would have ridiculous numbers with Daunte in there. :)

Be careful. Don't start thinking that just because Nick and Scott may like mobility in their quarterback that they don't want a pocket passer. This history of this offense dictates the need for a pocket passer.

Warner - Has done a nice job with Arizona, but he's no better than Frerotte at this point.

Nice post. I just disagree on Warner. Warner was light years better than Gus this year and has been his whole career. This year in ten games his completion % was 65%. compare that to 51%. And he threw a lot of good long balls and had a much higher YPA.

to me the best trade/ f/a option is Ramsey.

wash is committed to Brunell ($$) and drafter Campbell this yr. Ramsey will probably be cut.

he has a great arm. relatively accurate and tough. wash under spurrier was terrible. lousy OL. he got beat up.

he is still young. not too shell shocked (like Carr). and should come cheap.

also as a Tulane grad, Mueller probably followed him while in N.O.

let him learn Scott's system backing up GUS. also provides solid insurance to GUS.

Pennington Is Another Fiedler, Not Consistant W/ The Long Ball And Hasnt Had A Full Healthy Season Yet, Bag'em No Way! Culpeppper Is A Go!!!

My major criterion: Whoever we bring in must not have ever played for the Jets. Ever.

What do you mean by history of this offense?
