Guys get this...a bills fan is trying to tell me that when an NFL team punts the ball, the objective of the punter is to kick the ball out of bounds. Isnt this absurd...no matter what I tried to tell him he wouldnt listen. I was like WHY do you think the punting team rushes to the ball as fast as they can to surround it? Because theyre trying to let it ROLL all the way to the endzone and get AS CLOSE as it can get. Sometimes they even grab it because they dont want it to get inside the endzone or it becomes a touchback. He wont listen until I provide proof...can any of you guys give me something to show him so he knows the strategy behind punting? A link or something? Stupid bills fans are ridiculous...haha

He is right in a sense. I think a lot of teams instead of giving the other team a chance to return it would love the ball to go out of bounds as far as the punter can kick it. But a lot of punters accuracy isn't that good.

Against certain dangerous returners, punters will punt the ball out of bounds to avoid them to get a return. They will also sometimes punt the ball out of bounds to pin a team back to their endzone.

Otherwise punters usually kick it forward because that's how they'll get the most distance...and sometimes a roll.

he is right in the sense that if you kick it out of bounds then there is no return.. however it puts a lot of pressure on the accuracy of the punter.

in the old days 60's - early 80's as far as pinning a team back inside the 20 every punter aimed for the sideline. I don't know why the practice ended and punters now try to hang it high for a "flyer" to down the ball inside the 20. It might be due to accuracy, I really don't know. Just as the onside kick changed with the driving the ball into the ground to get a high bounce. You never saw kickers do that until the 90's.

It depends on the postion of the field of which there on. If they are punting down to inside the ten I am sure the would love to kick it out of bounds on the two. The problem is it is hard to judge exactly where the kick is going to actually break the plan and go out of bounds

The perfect punt will go out of bounds between the goalline and the 5 yard line "coffin corner". I say "out of bounds" because there is no risk of a touchback, no risk of return, and no risk of some dummy stepping into the endzone and touching it or misshandling the ball, causing it to roll into the endzone. If the punting team has no hope of reaching that "coffin corner" then you kick for distance and direction depending on the punt coverage scheme.

Depends on several circumstances. If you are deep in your own territory you go for distance. From around mid field you go for hang time and hope your flyer can cause a turnover or at least force a fair catch. In your opponents territory you try to get it out of bounds inside the 10. Of course you never want to kick a line drive to Dante Hall, regardless of field position. You also have to factor in things like how good your coverage team is, how good their returners are (like the aforementioned Hall), field conditions, and strength and accuracy of your punter.

i agree with you there, alot of kickers can NOT kick it very far with an angle. the ball goes a lot farther strait, then when angled. kicking it strait gets the most distance, but you rely on your ST to stop the runner. a guy cant return it for a TD when its out of bounds.

if they have a great returner, or STs, i would like to see it kicked out of bounds.

but if you have a great punter, like the bills do, he can kick it so far, that its better to kick it strait and have a net of 45 yards. insted of kicking it out of bounds for a net of 30. and dont forget about the bounce. if you get lucky, it could turn in to a VERY long punt.
