5. The desire for hybrid defensive backs: I say it 10 times a day that the NFL is a matchup game. NFL offensive coordinators are constantly trying to find matchups they can exploit. Reggie Bush and Vernon Davis are two prime examples of matchup nightmares for defenses. Teams countered with very high selections in this draft of players who can play safety and have corner skills. As Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said right after the draft, "Having Reggie Bush join our division presents different kinds of problems." Well, by the 16th pick in the draft, the hybrid defensive backs were gone. Michael Huff (No. 7), Donte Whitner (No. 8) and Jason Allen (No. 16) are the type of athletes who can handle the matchup game offensive coordinators are trying to play. Huff has been a surefire top-10 pick all along, but Whitner and Allen climbed up the draft boards quickly as soon as the coaches evaluated their ability to match up.

Hmmmm.......a safety that can cover like a corner and hit like a linebacker. Sounds like a Saban guy to me. It is a good thing that he only has to face RB in practice though! Hopefully Ronnie won't hurt him! Nick, speak to RB and let him know that we need Allen this year! :D

Where does it say anything about hitting like a linebacker?

I read another report I liked that said that teams are falling along with the "bishop" of the defense, the guy coaches can move around to a number of different areas to match up against people and move diagonally to make plays.

It's a good point.

I think we will see all kinds of things from Mr. Allen. Sabans grin after drafting him on ESPN was classic. You could see the gleam in his eye. He has a lot of things planned for Mr. Allen. One thing is that you could see Allen coming up to cover someone in the slot or at the LOS and then blitz. We all saw the highlights of this very thing of him and then watching the coverage skills. One play you see Allen, the next you see Yeremiah was a bullfrog.

Saban is licking his chops over not just Allen, but alot of our guys. He just needs to figure out what that plan is. Im sure he is doing that right now.

Correction: Already has done this.

i think Allen is a good player but do you guys think Cromartie could have been a better pick?

Not really. Are we looking for a pure CB? Not really. A lot of people were under this assumption. Was Cromrartie on our radar? I dont know, they had there top guys ranked with Allen being the last one. Cromrartie probably just missed that list. Saban is looking for guys who fit his system which means lots of variables. That is why we got guys who were open to change and moving around and having the ability to do those things. Cromrartie was probably someone Saban thought was not needed. We already have our CB's who will simply cover while our star and Dime DB's will make the big plays on the QB. did anyone see Daniels on a blitz? Madison? Our CB's job is basically, cover your guy close and let the front seven and the Safety/Star make the plays. Think NE.......once again.
