I just got back from overseas (last night) so excuse me for asking this question. What is LJ Shelton like? What are his strengths, weaknesses, etc? Is he an upgrade over McIntosh? I know this might have been discussed ad nauseum, but we'll someone please enlighten me. Thanks.

he was pretty solid out of Arizona and Cleveland when he played.

I've seen him blow some blocks but for the most part I personally consider him a huge upgrade over McIntosh a.k.a Wife Beater.

With Shelton and hopefully another veteran FA at RT I think we'll be set.

Anybody crossing their fingers for Tom Ashworth? I am.

he is an upgrade over dmac. From what I've read he is a pretty good run blocker. He might suffer in the pass rush against the faster DE's, but with Houck coaching him I think he will be just fine.

He is a Huge man and he is a very very good Run Blocker. He lacks in Pass Protection at times, But he is still good. I hope he does a great job for us. I just don't wanna start screaming at my TV like I did last year over lineman and there false starts!

ME 2

i believe he gets a bunch of penalties too but maybe houck can do something with him make him alot better

Just a few more details he is 6'6 and 345 pounds. Here is a few extra things from ESPN on him.

Shelton is a veteran who somewhat resurrected his career with the Browns last season. He played very well early in the season before struggling some late in the year. He is a player the Browns would like to re-sign, because his departure would create a huge void on the left side of their line. Shelton is a solid overall athlete for the position and can handle speed rushers in pass protection. His biggest weakness is that he is not very tough and does not show consistent pop in the run game. In this league, quality left tackles are hard to come by, so expect Shelton to have a solid market once free agency opens.

Great on the run, horrible on the pass. Basically Jonathan Ogden without the average pass-protection skills. He's sort of an upgrade but I wouldn't mind if we resigned D-Mac to a min contract for depth reasons. Other than LJ and Carey, no T on our roster has even started.

Wade Smith is depth at T and C.

Yum, Wade Smith starting at LT if LJ goes down. Culpepper's going to like the taste of turf if that happens.

Please Wade Smith is not that bad and we can't afford to pay a back-up starter money. Smith is a Good Back Up

Alabi would start at LT. He's the actual LT backup for the moment.

True, but I'd be more satisfied if we had someone with starting experience in the NFL at that spot. As far as Wade Smith goes, his performance at LT left me ready to puke. He's the reason we had to overpay for D-Mac. I've seen a chair block better.
