I have seen quite a few posts on here that deal with the O-line. Almost all of them include a complete bashing of LJ Shelton.

I want to put some things in perspective. Do you realize how hard it is to acquire a Left Tackle? They are super expensive ( 20 million Signing Bonus ) or require a very high draft pick ( top 10 ).

LJ Shelton was a first round pick that has prototypical size and power for an NFL left tackle and has displayed average talent since coming into the leauge.

He was acquired for a paultry 3-5 million dollar signing bonus which is a huge salary cap relief.

If you watch the tapes/TIVO closely, he has actually played pretty well in my opinion. I have watched every snap this season including the preseason and I am convinced we can win with him at left tackle. He gets good push in running game and when his fundamentals are correct he is a solid pass protector.

We are not going to get Willie Roaf, Walter Jones, Orlando Pace, etc. But LJ in my opinion is a great option relative to his cap hit.

Houck has a great track record of dealing w/ Big underachieving lineman ( Erik Williams in Dallas, Roman Oben in San Diego )...

Let's keep some perspective on this guys, if we didn't get LJ in the offseason, how do you suggest we get a LT? Overpay some guy 30 million dollars?

Thanks!

I bashes Shelton after the game... after reviewing it though.. i've changed my stance slightly. After the only sack HE surrendered... he did play strong from the 1st quarter on.

Give him some more time to gel, it takes a while. All our OL have the size and just need more game experience to gel, the WORST thing to do now is reshuffle the OL.

I saw LJ Shelton in NY just yesterday. I went down into the subway system and he asked me for a dollar before I could pass...lol

Agreed, he wasn't as bad after reviewing the game and looking at him more closely.

I am predicting LJ's best years are ahead of him. I think Houck will have him playing the best ball of his career ( look at what he did for turnstyle Damion Mcintosh last year ).

Shelton was doing "ok" up until this past week, imo.

Many of us do recognize that although he's just "ok", it isn't easy obtaining a quality LT.

So, we bash him a bit, then state that he's the best we've got so work with it. The other problem is that while they need to slide a little help his way, all of the lineman need a little help slid their way, including Randy and he's supposed to be said 'help'.

Are you kidding me guy...he got owned the last game. I watched every snap 3x now and he flat out sucks. He was slow off the ball, he missed his assignmnents and let blitzers blow right by him (partly Jeno James fault). Teams don't let quality LT's walk away-period. This guy was sent packing multiple times.
And yeah we did get cap relief but are getting it back in grief from this clown. He has very limited skills and was not a good signing. We should have done something better imo whether it was the draft or by trade.

At first I thought you meant he was a bum, but I got it after reading a second time. I don't think he is a turnstyle(sp?) though. If the DEs had to pay before going through, don't you think it'd take them a little longer to get to the backfield?

j/k
I like Shelton.

Dammit, I missed when my postometer rolled over to 1,000. Now I have to wait for 498 more posts.

Who should we have signed instead? Who would you have drafted? Who would you trade for?

We must have watched a different tape because LJ played pretty well if you ask me. He gave up 1 sack. He has room for improvement no doubt.

It took me so long to get here though. I should have way more posts, but there was like a 6 month and a 4 month span where I didn't post at all, and I just read everything.

Denney and Kelsey each got sacks... Denney got 3... 3!!!

im a huge bills fan, but even i will say there is no excuse for Denney getting more than 1 sack in a game period. one was a free sack on the fumble, but still.

What does that have to do w/ LJ Shelton? He gave up 1 sack. The other 2 sacks he is blamed for is one where the DE is being blocked by Randy McMichael and gets in for the sack. The commentators said it was LJ but it was Randy ( must have been a scheming problem or missed assignment ).

The other was a blitz by Ko Simpson where LJ properly blocked the DE. Jeno James blocked the DT and no one picked up the blitzing safety.

IMO, that play was just a good defensive call by the Bills, the Phins were trying to run a screen pass w/ Chambers in the backfield and the Bills made an excellent call..

LJ has been blamed for both of these.

I am not claiming he is a great left tackle. I am saying relative to what we paid for him, I am happy w/ the acquisition.
