I have seen quite a few posts on here that deal with the O-line. Almost all of them include a complete bashing of LJ Shelton.
I want to put some things in perspective. Do you realize how hard it is to acquire a Left Tackle? They are super expensive ( 20 million Signing Bonus ) or require a very high draft pick ( top 10 ).
LJ Shelton was a first round pick that has prototypical size and power for an NFL left tackle and has displayed average talent since coming into the leauge.
He was acquired for a paultry 3-5 million dollar signing bonus which is a huge salary cap relief.
If you watch the tapes/TIVO closely, he has actually played pretty well in my opinion. I have watched every snap this season including the preseason and I am convinced we can win with him at left tackle. He gets good push in running game and when his fundamentals are correct he is a solid pass protector.
We are not going to get Willie Roaf, Walter Jones, Orlando Pace, etc. But LJ in my opinion is a great option relative to his cap hit.
Houck has a great track record of dealing w/ Big underachieving lineman ( Erik Williams in Dallas, Roman Oben in San Diego )...
Let's keep some perspective on this guys, if we didn't get LJ in the offseason, how do you suggest we get a LT? Overpay some guy 30 million dollars?
Thanks!
