Looking back at the 2005 NFL Draft

Since the only other player drafted in the first round that year who is head & shoulders above Ronnie is Merriman and the fact that these guys have only played 2yrs, considering the position our team was in at the time, YES I do think we got the best player available.

Besides, there was virtually no way that Saban was going to draft Merriman that high anyway.
 
The only guy I would take over Ronnie would be Jammal Brown. Obviously he wasn't graded anywhere near the #2 overall pick so Ronnie looks like a real solid selection at this point in time. The '05 draft looks pretty weak actually. I wouldn't take Merriman because of his steroid problem that I have a funny feeling isn't going away anytime soon.

Yeah i would agree with that. The draft was extremely week if you look at everyone in the top 10. Cadillac is a good pick when healthy, Ronnie has been solid for what he's been given, Alex Smith is developing, and Braylon has shown flashes. The Troy Williamson pick was horrible in my opinion. They tried to replace Moss with a guy that ran fast at the combine. Moss was insane throughout college and to replace him with a workout warrior was stupid.
 
I think a case could be made that 2 of the top 3 choices both went to SD. They got two of the best play makers in the entire 05 draft. I would have to put Ronnie in the top three also. JMO
 
knowing what i know now, maybe frank gore but its only been two years
 
Frank Gore has been the most productive runningback. I would give Caddy a close 2nd with Ronnie Brown taking 3rd. Cedric Benson could have had more success early if he didn't hold out of camp like a jackass.
 
What a boring draft class. Why people cry about the Ronnie pick when he is one of the better players picked that year is beyond me.
 
I wouldn't change a single pick in that draft though if Matt Leinart had declared, I would draft differently. Now for the 2006 draft....
 
Hindsight being 20/20, I'd pick Merriman over Brown and pick up Gore in the second. Reminds me: Maybe I should start working on that time machine I've been putting off. I'm sure I can give H. Wayne Huizenga circa 2005 some invaluable advice about the draft and about that wonderful and sincere genius of a coach he just hired.

He has the tools to be a Pro Bowl runningback but he just dosen't have the line to allow him to do so. I look at Ricky Williams back in 02 and he can make stuff happen with decent line, he's just that good. Ronnie on the other hand is more of a power runner that needs a line more so to help him get to the 2nd level of the defense.

He has fewer yards from scrimmage, less TDs, lower YPC, fewer receptions, etc, etc....

His career YPC is 3.8. How can you possibly think he has been more productive than Ronnie Brown?
