Many observers question Miami Dolphins quarterback Daunte Culpepper's ability to read defenses. What are your thoughts on his skills?
He can read defenses but he is often late and lacks timing with his reads. He is definitely a quarterback who can be schemed up by teams with multiple-front looks and movements as well as different coverage looks. Often he will be quick to go to his check down options, failing to let route progressions develop enough. Other times, he will be late delivering the ball on his downfield routes. This is consistent with a quarterback who lacks timing in his reads.
His best success as a quarterback – under current Rams head coach Scott Linehan when he was offensive coordinator with the Vikings – was when he was given half-field reads and worked heavily off play action, which by design gives a quarterback a simple two-option read.
He will gradually develop nicely under offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and coach Nick Saban, who will drill this home to him. Against a team like the Steelers who mix their fronts nicely and disguise their coverages well, it's a difficult task to run the ball and set up play action when you are struggling to block their front seven, which was certainly the case in the Dolphins’ season opener.

I know for a fact Daunte will be fine. Good post King. Every one needs to chill out a little bit because this will get fixed.

Daunte is well ahead of schedule and will return to his 2004 playing form. Lets not forget that he has matured since then and should be just fine once the gel starts to set with him and his offense. Here is to without a doubt the best QB we have had since Marino. + he seems to love playing for Miami and is a hard worker. He seems to want IT....don't you think?

How can you fear for them both, when Daunte and the Dolphins were beating the Super Bowl Champs in their own home in the season opener until 6 minutes left in the game. It was a dog fight against one of the best defenses in the NFL. With a mediocre O-line in front of Daunte. Are you guys really serious or did you guys only read about the game and come to your conclusions.
Or maybe I am just a Homer, maybe thats it. I do always seem to get let down by my Fins BUT I am pretty sure it wont happen this year.......:dolphins:

The same arugment cant be said about any QB in the league. Defensive co-oridinators 'scheme up' agaisnt every opposing offense. My 7 year old could write a more thought provoking article.

I know that from the start of the 2005 season which coincides with the start of Dauntes struggles their has been a ton of change to everything that was routine in his career. He needs to get back into a comfortable routine. He will return to form once he gets comfortable with the timing of his WR and the way the Oline blocks. If you ever noticed when Dan Marino was in the pocket the pressure would always seem to be from his left and right and he would step up into the pocket and fire the ball, it's the trust, comfort and routine he had with not only his WR's but his Oline, in other words it was his routine.

These aren't excuses, it's a fact that when you change one or two things players are comfortable with it's possible to move forward without much adjustment, but when you change nearly everything a QB has grown use to having there is obviously an adjustment period. Thats where Daunte was at the begining of 05. He now has the same situation going into 06, it will take time to get the comfort level that produces consistency. Daunte still threw for 260 yrds in his first real full game with a new team.

He made two mistakes at the end of the Steelers game, but you have to know that Daunte feels like he has to prove his doubters wrong and he made a couple of throws he shouldn't have made. Saban and company will sit down with him and watch the film and figure out a better option the next time the situation comes up. It's all an adjustment period and Daunte will adjust. We will all be happy campers by week 10.

*note: Be patient people it could get worse before it gets better, please realize it's a process. I say this because if he has another rough game or two the doom and gloomers will be out in force and it tends to manifest into something bigger then it should be.

That's a very good point. I hope it turns out to be true.
