A few things to note:

* People will be happy that Eric Mangini is not a candidate. It is something I supported, but we can put that to bed now. You were all right and I was wrong.

* HOWEVER, Mando brings up a few points I have made this week. One, once the GM candidate is ID'ed can the Fins get him to accept the deal. Steve ross has failed to close deals in the past. People here have been all giddy over all the quality candidates that they have interviewed. That is great, but getting one of them to take it is where ""the rubber meets the road". The Fins cannot be turned down by the guy they eventually pick. A second point, is even if Aponte is not getting more power, how are things going to work for the new GM between Aponte and Joe Philbin? That has to be a question at this point for most of these candidates. I am sure the goal is to find someone that can work side by side with them, but at the end of the day what happens if there is a perfect candidate to head this team, but they are not fond of the Aponte/Philbin axis? Tough question. Do you not hire the guy? Do you let go of Aponte? Obviously, Joe is not leaving. Finally, I still want to know why this selection is join to take so long to fill. My theory was they were wanting to talk to Eric Mangini, who is knee deep in coaching right now with the Niners…or a personnel man from one of the remaining teams. IF, IF, IF that is not the case, the team runs the risk of looking incompetent that they cannot pull the trigger on one of these candidates. It is fine line of doing due diligence and looking confused and not committed to your pick.

* While I think this team needs some experience somewhere, I have no issue going after the "up and coming candidate". It is the trend around the league and some of the names that Mando uses Scott Pioli, Jerry Angelo and A.J. Smith do not excite me at all. The people that Miami have interviewed seem qualified and deserve a shot at the next level of their profession.

Should be an interesting week or so.

Thanks for the link as always Hayden. Another thought might be that they seriously want to interview Gamble or someone else whom they have not received permission to interview from a team that is not in the playoffs. No telling how long they would wait on something like that. Another possibility is that the candidates themselves are interviewing elsewhere, and those other teams may also be waiting on candidates still in the playoffs. It is entirely possible we are not the first choice of some of these candidates.

I am far more concerned with quality of the candidate then fearing that they may look inept if it takes two weeks. Honestly I think it's nothing more than an excuse to pile on, whether you are a fan or a member of the media, if they take their time. They are in an advantageous position and are being thorough. A tip of the hat to Ross and Peterson in searching for the best "up and comer".

Typical that the media allows their mouth to overrun their ass then start back tracking. Amazing how people continue to fall for their crap then, like the media, have to back step and readjust. Try waiting until it plays out, keep the big picture in focus and have a little patience.

I don't like that Aponte is part of this whole league chatter.

As far as getting up and comers, I have no objections to that, but he has to know what he's doing, especially in the draft. The number one reason we got rid of Ireland is because of the drafts, not because he couldn't attract free agents. I can see Farmer being excellent in free agency, that was his specialty, but he's less experienced with the college side and the draft. Let's face it, if we have another crappy draft this year, no one is going to be happy with the new GM no matter what his name is.

No one is talking OC, but that is going to be huge, too. And since no OC has been chosen, I'm wondering if they're looking at someone they haven't yet received official permission to talk to yet, like someone on the staff of one of the playoff teams. Anyone hear any gossip?

So Armando made up the Mangini talk last week, kept trying to feed it over the course of a week and now admits there is no truth. Just Armando being Armando.

No gossip but my hopes are they are waiting for the Lions to make their hire and if it's not Kubiak, he'll be the new OC. I don't see anyone from the 4 teams still playing.

I don't believe anything that bug-eyed idiot says.

Do we have the ****tiest Sports Journalist(i use this term loosely) in the nation?

Let them take their time. Jumping into a decision for the sake of expediency doesn't help and can actually hurt.

The entire "close the deal" part of this article smacks of drama mongering. Ross didn't handle the Harbaugh/Sparano issue very well........3 years ago! I guess this is the type of commentary you produce when you really don't know a lot. The fact that Ireland is gone and Sherman is gone and there wasn't a tremendous amount of drama regarding those two departures (except on this website) should be more of the focus.....but that is not juicy enough.

Hiring an up an coming GM is ok with me.

Hayden I agree that he must close the deal this time with one of the top candidates. On the other hand, and unlike many in the so-called media, I am going to give Ross the benefit of the doubt on this. He knows he has to get this right to have any credibility left as an owner. As a business owner myself, sometimes we are slow to change what has worked for us in the past or we rely too much on our gut or our instincts. This time he is letting the football people run the process. It took him awhile but I think he's finally doing it the right way, and I could care less what a bunch of "good ole boys" think. This from a group that have resisted every important change the game has seen over the years. So I'm not surprised they are critical of us doing things differently or, God forbid, having a woman as part of the process. One of these "up and comers" WILL accept the job and hopefully they will give this drifting ship some direction. Plus if we finally get the draft and free agency right, it will make all of them seem very smart.

I get the feeling Kubiak was holding out for a head coaching job also. Have we even interviewed him? I cant find anything that confirms we spoke to him just that he was on the radar.

I gotta think Ross and co. don't give a you know what about credibility with the media and care a lot more about getting things going right, finding the right people and winning!

I'm pretty sure nobody even considered him being even a remote possibility. Everyone seemed to know he wasn't a candidate except you.

The OC search is flying under the radar because it lacks the drama that some are trying to create in the GM search. You only need to look around in here to see that the large majority of the discussion and drama is about a GM hire, Aponte and Philbin.

To answer your question the only interview I am aware of was Lazor last Friday.
