It strikes me that if Peyton Manning is at the top of the list for Miami that they must not view Matt Flynn as a franchise quarterback. But if you bring in Manning then you also need to draft a qb of the future. It would be an aggressive move for the Dolphins, but could anyone see the team bringing in Manning on a one year deal and drafting Robert Griffin III? That would solve qb issue both short and long-term.

I don't see that happening. If they trade up for RG3, I don't think they would bring in Manning. They would probably start RG3 from day one.

I would only pursue Manning at this point of his career if my team were a QB away from a SB run. Although a healthy Manning would make us very competitive, we are still a year or two away from really laying the wood. With that being said, I won't be upset if we get Manning assuming that he is heathy.

RGIII is a very smart and athletically gifted QB that has every bit of potential that one would look for when drafting a QB. However, the cost involved in jumping up to get Griffin would certainly be prohibitive considering that there is a third option.

Flynn has shown exceptional capability and ability to execute in Philbin's offense while in GB. Philbin has as much knowledge of Flynn's capabilities, potential, and weaknesses as anyone in the league. Flynn will be expensive but not nearly as expensive as Manning and will not require any draft picks to acquire. Thus, the Fins will be enabled to improve their offensive line, pass rush, and possibly tight end and safety through the draft. This option keeps our draft and salary cap intact but is predicated upon Philbin being sold that Flynn is absolutely a franchise QB.

I do not think that it is possible to combine any two of these options as it would cripple the future drafts and/or salary cap for at least two to three years.

I also do not think that anyone in the Fins organization told anyone that Manning is their top target...that is BS media speculation. I wouldn't assume anything about Ireland's or Philbin's opinion of a player as they would have to be completely ignorant to tell anyone anything about who they plan to target, draft, or sign at this point. Also, they can't contact Peyton or really even comment on pursuing him as he is still very much under contract with the Colts.

Why does everyone think Manning is gonna get traded? If the Colts choose not to retain him they will release him so they'll be off the hook for his roster bonus.

Actually Steve Ross said if Manning is healthy and available, he is their top target.

I personally don't like selling the farm to move up to draft RGIII when we could get Flynn and draft someone else in the first round. I'm not totally convinced RGIII is legit. Not sure Flynn is either, but he won't cost us a lot of picks.......and we could draft a "b" list person in the later rounds. If Flynn sucks then we put Moore back in (who played well last year) and groom the "B" list player. This is the safest route with minimal casualties.

Either you misread or I did not make my thought clear: the clause about giving up draft picks referred to RGIII and the part about being expensive referred to Manning but I didn't clarify that. Sorry for the bad communication but we are on the same page!:hump:

No way we sign Manning and draft RG3,,,,,not at the same time....no way that will happen. I could see us signing P. Manning and maybe drafting another QB in 2-3 years. Why would we waste a draft pick or many draft picks to move up to get RG3, if we had Manning. I just hope Manning gets healthy again and won't have to retire like many guys with neck injuries.

I did not know that Ross had actually made a statement about Manning as I clearly thought that was just media generated hype. Regardless, I think that Flynn plus Moore plus Keenum/Wilson/whomever is a great plan but I am not keen on signing Flynn and using a high (1-3) rounder on a QB so Tannehill/Weeden/etc are out of the mix. This seems to give us the greatest chance of success and the biggest hedge against failure.

Yeah, I hope he's healthy as well. Really don't think getting Manning would be the right move for Miami though.
