Adam Gase was part of the Denver Broncos' coaching family for six seasons.
He started as receivers coach for Josh McDaniels in 2009-10. He then became John Fox's quarterbacks coach from 2011-12, when he helped teach first Tim Tebow to a magical playoff run and then Peyton Manning through his exciting comeback season.
And then in 2013-14,Gase was the Broncos' record-setting offensive coordinator.
After a one-year detour to Chicago, where he helped Jay Cutler post a career-best 92.3 passer rating, Gase officially named Saturday as head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Manning started working on his statement about Gase at 6 a.m. Saturday. In 2013, Manning and Gase became the most prolific offensive duo in NFL history. Manning threw for a single-season record 55 touchdowns and 5,477 passing yards and the Broncos scored a record 606 points -- 37.9 points per game.
Can we say that again: 37.9 points per game.
"I'm very happy for Adam," Manning said. "Adam had a great impact on me during our years together here in Denver as my quarterbacks coach and then as offensive coordinator. He's an extremely hard worker -- a grinder. He's extremely bright on all things football, an excellent communicator and always eager to learn more. He asks a lot of questions and writes everything down. I've always been impressed with his work ethic and his eagerness to learn more.
"He'll be an excellent coach without a doubt. He is ready for this for sure.''
Notice how Manning hammered home Gase's work ethic? Some statements are more sincere than others. Broncos receiver Emmanuel Sanders wasn't here in the Broncos' record-setting season of 2013, but he had his best production in 2014 when he had 101 catches for 1,404 yards.
"I know Jarvis Landry is over there jumping up and down,'' Sanders said of the Dolphins' top receiver. "Adam is a players' coach. He's inheriting a solid team, a team that has a lot of athletes. I think he's going to do a good job. The only thing is he's in the same division with the Patriots.''
Of all the head coaches New England boss Bill Belichick has got fired, and hired, in the AFC East since the Patriots' dynasty began in 2001, it's Gase's turn to see if he can wrestle division power away.
