Q&A with Manny Wright
A conversation with rookie defensive tackle Manny Wright, who cried early in the preseason when coach Nick Saban yelled at him but has bounced back well enough that he made the team and figures in its plans:
Q. How frustrated were you when things weren't going well and the coach had made you cry and was criticizing you publicly?
A. 'It was to the point where I was thinking of quitting. I had to think about making the right decision. I had to figure out whether I wanted to play football. I was thinking how many people would I be letting down. I was thinking about my family and a couple of other guys who believed in me. I also remember [USC] coach [Pete] Carroll's face because he would say, `I told you so.' But I had made it to this point, and it was something I wanted for a long time. So I stuck with it. And it's all starting to come together now. I can see the coaches are starting to trust me a little more. The thing they were worried about was consistency because I wasn't being consistent. But I'm staying after practice now, and I come in early for meetings so I can learn what they want me to learn. I think now they're seeing me be consistent in every practice and hopefully that will carry over to the games.''
