I had to entertain some relatives Sunday and missed the game. I heard Manny had a sack. Can someone please summarize his play from the game? Has he improved from the soft, out of shape rookie he looked like in preseason? Does he look like a possible starter? Does he look better physically (lost weight, etc.)?

He only played for about 5-10 snaps, but he looked pretty damn good. He owned Bennie Anderson basically every play. When he was double teamed several times, he still got penetration.

He ended up with a sack and I believe a pass deflection, which is great for the limited time was playing.

Oh yeah-

He looks better, but he still doesnt look like he is in great shape. He didnt really play enough to judge him getting tired or anything, but he was not giving up on the play like he did in preseason if he didnt beat someone right away.

He's not built like Kevin Carter or Vonnie Holiday though. He is pretty clearly still fatter then those guys. Carter is suposedly 6'6" 305, but Wright looks heavier then just 10 pounds more then him.

He was also credited with 2 hurries, in his short time in the game.

i missed the game unluckily

Did they have him in on obvious pass plays?

For a freaking rookie who is a project who in theory should be a two year project he looked great. He wasn't the initial pressure on his sack but he made a good move to get there. He was very hard to block out there and you can tell that at least he will be a good 3rd and long defensive tackle. Does he still need some work? Of course he does. Just remember this is a guy who needed another year of college ball before he was ready to make it into the pros. I was very surprised by how well he did and looking forward to seeing him play more.

that 5th round pick is starting to look like a very good investment....

I disagree, I think Manny was in much better shape. And there will be more to come. Saban will work him into the lineup slowly until the kid is full time. that is Sabans MO.

In the NFL a redshirt season seems to last about 11 or 12 games. The Patriots redshirted Vince Wilfork the same way.

What Wright needed was to harden his cookie dough body into NFL shape. Considering where he was, you just can't do that in one preseason or training camp. And, during the season if you're playing, you're really working too hard and undergoing too much stress to have any chance at molding your body the way you want. He spent all this time basically inactive so he could get into NFL shape, and he seems to have done it. Him being dominant should not be considered the "surprise". The surprise is that the coaching staff somehow managaed to motivate him into working hard and getting in shape. The surprise has already passed. Now what you have is the player everyone knew Manny could be if you ever got him to stop being a "turd" and get into shape, work hard, etc.

If he truly only got about 5-10 snaps, then quite frankly it is amazing that in those 5-10 snaps he was able to amass 1 sack, 2 hurries, and a pass defensed. At this point, you can start unleashing expectations that the guy will be a good starting DT in this league. He's got a lot further to go, but it is safe to say that he has already passed the impetus that dropped him from the 2nd round to the 5th round in the supplemental draft.

But I think he'd be out of breath after just reading this thread.

You could see his influence on the game when he was in. The play he got his sack was a true indication of the kind of pocket disruption he's capable of. I truly hope he gets some more snaps against the Chargers.

Yeah at this point he kind of stated his case loud and clear for not being inactive ever again.

What should be remembered is no one should have expected anything from this guy this season, he had just become set to become a starter at USC this season, so he was seriously light on experience and was out of shape.

As I see it he was drafted completely as a developmental project that really wasn't expected to challenge for any real playing time until 2006.

The fact that he is getting some reps and making an impact should be very encouraging to all fans, I saw a big guy that can disrupt the pocket.
