SCOUTING WRIGHT
The Dolphins sent five scouts, including recently named general manager Randy Mueller, to a workout by former USC defensive tackle Manuel Wright.

But the consensus among NFL scouts from the at least 28 teams who attended the workout was that Wright was out of shape and didn't help his status for the league's supplemental draft Thursday.

The 6-6 Wright weighed in at 329 pounds. Although he ran the 40-yard dash at between 4.98 and 5.10 seconds among the times kept by scouts, Wright evidentially did a poor job in agility work. He also did only 16 repetitions on the bench press, and his 27 ½-inch vertical leap was merely adequate.

Many scouts came away questioning Wright's work ethic considering he had more than a month to get ready. Questions about work ethic have haunted Wright for his entire college career.

According to John Murphy of NextLevel Scouting, most teams consider Wright a fourth-round pick, at best. At least two he talked to said he was no better than a fifth-rounder. The Dolphins, who have a strong need for a defensive tackle, were also unimpressed, according to several sources and might not take Wright until the fourth round, if they take him at all.

This guy's a riddle, isn't he? I don't know what to think. Size and some limited experience is all he seems to have going for him, and that's not saying much.

He's dumb as a post, apparently lazy - lazy enough that he did not prepare adequately for the one big opportunity of his professional life. Weak for a guy his size...do you spend a pick on a guy that has nothing to offer except the slimmest chance of some upside?

If he had been in this past draft, where would he have gone?

I read somewhere that in the past draft he was anywhere from a 5th or 6th

I'm not sure where he would have gone in the draft. I hadn't heard of him until just a few weeks ago. I still can't believe he was out of shape. Even with that, he'll probably go to some team in the 2nd or 3rd round. Personally, I wouldn't put a bid higher then a 6th.

If a guy showed anything at all, that's what I would do too, a 6th. But man, this guy has nothing! Height, that's it.

Yet we keep hearing about him; is it because he's got the stage to himself, so to speak, in the supplemental draft (in terms of DT)?

Then again, you hate to pass on someone that could be the next Eric Swann...

I think that's it. Everyone knows we need DT help, so all the focus goes to Wright. I have faith in Saban that if he puts in a bid, he won't overbid.

Actually, I found Brett Tessler's comments on this very interesting:

Especially because I can't remember Brett ever coming out with such a comment on a player or prospect in the past.

I saw that, and I respect Brett's opinion; it just makes it all the more puzzling that there's still buzz about this guy. Wasn't there a report yesterday that the Eagles might take him wirth their 2nd?

I think we got a steel her with getting him in the 5th. Shoot, the player we took this year has no chance of contributing really, and this guy has first round talent.

It's like Cecil Collins. In the 5th round, you're really not sacrificing much, since most 5th round picks bomb out anyway, so you swing for the fences once in awhile. Of course, let's hope Wright turns into a better player than Cecil the Diesel.

And there you go...

I like the pick. I am leery of giving up a 5th for a guy with so much downside and so much (seeming) lack of self-respect, but apparently it was the lower of our two 5th's that we used.

Plus, I'm confident in Saban's ability to evaluate talent until he proves unworthy of that confidence.

correction: it was our only 5th-round pick, the second overall in the round. At first I wondered how we managed to get 2...:o

That's based on our record this year... if we end up winning the big one next year (not saying it'll happen) then we really gave up the last pick in the 5th. I like the pick... using our bad record last year to our full advantage by taking him with an early 5th that should hopefully turn out to be in the bottom half of the 5th next year. Here's to hoping they can light a fire under his butt. He's certainly done quite a bit with the very limited playing time he had.

Any NWA fans here?
The reason I ask is Wright is Straight Out Of Compton!!

I dont know much about him, but a bigtime USC fan who is a High School coaching friend of mine was really talking up how great he thinks Wright could be in Miami. Just thought i'd pass it on.

This reminds me of a routine Chris Rock did...
Reporter: OJ, where are you from?
OJ Simpson: Straight out of Compton!
Reporter: And when you got rich, where did you move?
OJ: Straight out of Compton!
