The Dolphins are set to part ways with one of the top kickers in franchise history, with a source saying today the team will release Olindo Mare if unable to trade him.

The Dolphins are expected to sign former New York Giants kicker Jay Feely to replace Mare, who was set to collect a $250,000 roster bonus along with a $1.5 million base salary for 2007.

Mare, 34, finished with a career-low field goal percentage of 72.2 (26 of 36) but made his final nine attempts of the season and led the NFL in touchbacks with 24.

Feely, 30, had an 85.2 field-goal percentage (23 of 27) for the New York Giants in 2006 with a long of 47 yards. Feely, who visited Monday with the Dolphins, had 12 touchbacks last season.

mare will be missed somewhat in that he has been with the franchise for so long and he in the past has been a great kicker however he is way past his prime and missed way to many kicks last year....im excited to be bringing in jay feeley, ive always liked the guy and would be very happy to see him in a dolphins uni

This move puzzles me a little. If MIA was to release Mare before 6/1 the cap space is barely $0.8mil. If they waited for 6/1, they clear almost $2mil.

Now if we are able to trade Mare before 6/1 then fine. But to just cut him before 6/1 doesnt make any sense to me.

Actually what they are trying to do is re-negotiate his contract. If he doesnt agree to that then he would be on his way out.

Although I don't totally agree with letting Mare go, I'm not adamantly opposed to it either. Whatever we do, I absolutely do not want them to bring Jay Feely in here. He was absolutely abysmal for the Falcons (I watched more than my nauseating share of him living in ATL) and it's well documented how poorly he played for the Giants. There are a couple of good kicker prospects in the draft. Since we seem to be stockpiling picks, I don't think it would be a stretch to draft one of them. GO PHINZ!!! :dolphins: :dolphins: :dolphins:

I've been calling for Mare's head for the past few years. I appreciate that Mare made some pretty big kicks for the Fins over the years, but frankly, he has never been the same since he got paid. His excuses outnumbered the big kicks he made over the past couple of years and his salary was much more than his level of production. No kicker is perfect, but Mare missed too many easy kicks, killing a team that had trouble scoring points both mentally and on the scoreboard. We need clutch players who rise to the occasion and unfortunately Mare was no longer one of those players. In fact he had become unclutch. I thank Olindo for his years here but its time to move on.
