What if Saban had taken over (with the same coaching knowledge he has now) while Dan was still playing. Do you think the results of Dan's last few years would have been the same, or do you think we would have drafted better and found the missing pieces to be back in the Super Bowl?

No right or wrong answers, just opinion with some reasonable justification.

Maybe last few but I would never replace Shula. Anyways Saban hasnt done anything yet but we have potential.

I did not mean replacing Shula... actually I meant more Saban instead of Johnson during those last few years.

I think no. I think at that point his body was starting to go. I do think it would be cool if they brought him on as like a Qb coach or something. He is a FIN for life no?

I`m inclined to say no also. Dans last legitimate shot at a ring was Shulas last year (`95) when we loaded up on high priced FAs and underachieved to 9-7. Marino did put up good numbers one year under JJ though (`98?), but we got pounded by Denver in the playoffs. I don`t even like to think back on his final season in `99...Marino was half the player he once was, that was a tough season to watch!

Well like Saban Im trying to no longer answer hypotheticals. I try and model myself after him. It works pretty well. My life improves consistantly since I began adopting his principals. However I have to say if we would've gotten Saban instead of JJ the phins wouldve won at least 4 straight super bowls and Marino may still be playing. We could be going for like 10 in a row.

Dan just looked to nicked up the last couple of years. I think he had a pinched nerve in his neck which made it hard for him to zing it in their like usual. That being said, we could have at least gotten close.

Yeah I was watching the special on ESPN classic, and one of the trainers said that in the 90's his body was starting to break down with knee work almost every year, the ACL, but the thing that really did him in was the neck/nerve thing, which affected his throwing and never really seemed to bounce back from that because he could no longer throw the way we was accustomed to.

I think anyone would probably have been better than Johnson. He was always more concerned about his "superficial image" than he was about Dan or the team. Saban & Marino would have been good together and we would have had a team, instead of Johnsons one man show. I think he was Dans down fall more than anything else.

Hypothetically, judging of Saban's success and Dan being Dan, we would have been the "New England" dynasty before New England was (Multiple SBs). But, it can't be proved. Saban wouldn't have been the coach he is now if he was around then, and Dan had been around for over a decade at that point, and still had no running game.

I think if you substitue Nick Saban in with the defensive personel that Jimmy Johnson drafted certainly you'd have to think the Dolphins would have had at least one super bowl team? With Saban's very un "vanilla" schemes, and ability to come up with creative and effective defenses utilizing players to their maximum potential. A young Zach, along with guys like Sam Madison, Jason Taylor would have made a much more formidible defense and then with a veteran QB like Dan Marino. Some reliable recievers in OJ McDuffie and Oronde Gadsen, and maybe Saban brings in a decent running back. And you've got to believe that Miami had a super bowl caliber team.
