From the article:

"Scott Kacsmar, a researcher who does data projects for Pro-Football-Reference.com, researched Elway's comebacks and made several startling discoveries:
Many of his comebacks weren't comebacks at all. They were "fourth-quarter, game-saving drives," as the Daily Camera called them, or Game Winning Drives (GWDs) in Kacsmar's words. In many of these games, Elway wasn't rallying the Broncos back from a deficit, he was driving the Broncos to victory after the opponent tied the game.
Dan Marino had many GWDs of his own, but the Dolphins' public relations department didn't classify them as comebacks. In fact, Marino had more GWDs than Elway, by a 51-49 margin.
If you count only "true" fourth-quarter comebacks, then Marino also leads Elway, 36 to 34."

Suck it, Broncos fans!

Hey Gardenhead love the post!! What a QB Marino was!!!!! i think Marino was a better QB then John but because he won two superbowls he's automatically better then Dan the man.

Very cool read! I agree on the distinction between comeback drives and GWDs - they are completely different things.

The whole stat of "Game Winning Comebacks" is overrated for the following reasons:

1. Why was the team losing? Cause the QB threw a bunch of picks?
2. What if the QB leads a heroic comeback and leaves :45 left on the clock and the other team scores to win? The QB did his job, but the defense sucked.
3. What if the RB is responsible for the winning drive and the QB only completed a few passes on that drive?

HOWEVER, its nice to know that whenever some jerk is trying to claim that Elway was better than Marino, we can no dispell the "Comeback King" myth. We can also point out that the Broncos were punished by the league for circumventing the salary cap when they won their back-to-back Super Bowls. I truly believe those Super Bowls should not count. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A28969-2004Sep17.html

This gets NO publicity, cause no one wants to admit that 2 Super Bowls ought to be taken off the books.

Marino was the greatest QB of all time. Period.

It's clear - to me at least - that Elway played on much better teams than Marino. Marino masked the fact that the Dolphins of the 90s were not very good teams. Marino's prime was spent keeping above water a team with a poor defense and poor running game. Put Elway or Montana one those teams, and I think the Dolphins would have struggled to make the playoffs with anywhere near the frequency Marino got us there.
