I did several analyses of various NFL units to see what position coaches and defensive coordinators teach their players to do it right. Mark Duffner definitely came up on that list.
The best linebackers unit in the league belonged to the San Francisco 49ers (coached by Jim Leavitt) but that's a little unfair because they're a 3-4 system and Aldon Smith got the bulk of his positive grade as a pass rusher, often with his hand in the dirt. If you're just grading Patrick Willis and Navorro Bowman, and comparing them with Paul Posluszny and Daryl Smith, that's a more even grading...except Willis we all know is a GOD at linebacker, and Posluszny was supposed to be a BUST out of Buffalo.
Loving the way this defensive coaching staff is shaping up. Loving that Joe Philbin is picking qualified guys that don't necessarily come wholesale over from the Packers. Kevin Coyle is another guy that made chicken salad out of chicken sh-t. He didn't come up in my position rankings but honestly when you have secondary players like Reggie Nelson, Chris Crocker, Pacman Jones and Kelly Jennings, and you can pair them up with Leon Hall and Nate Clements and get a top defense out of it...that's something to put on the resume.Mark Duffner coming over on a lateral move is to me an A+ hire. Kevin Coyle promoted to Defensive Coordinator is at least a B hire. If he's able to get Mike Sherman as Offensive Coordinator that would be another A+ hire.
