Alright, I felt it was necessary to begin a new thread for the Offensive Coordinator because everything about the position seems to be spread around two or three different threads.

So here's the latest in the Whipple developments.

He has been offered the job.

However, he has also been offered the job as the Philadelphia Eagles QB coach as well.

So, he does have a choice in jobs.

Whipple is a great mind. All you have to do is take a look at his resume and see what he has been able to accomplish. He could work anywhere basically.

I believe that we have a couple of things going for us:

1. Our job is the more lucrative job in terms of responsibilities. I do not have any idea what Miami has offered Whiiple and I certainly have no clue what Philadelphia has offered him.

2. I feel that Donovan McNabb's is on the back end of his career. I think that McNabb is one of the better all-around quarterbcaks in the league and I think he is criticized beyond what he deserves but McNabb is what he is. In reality, Whipple has the opportunity to either work with McNabb at the end of his career, or take on a project such as Kevin Kolb. Kolb is certainly not a Matt Ryan or a or a guy who is getting reading to hit stride like a Carson Palmer.

3. Springboard job. How many time have we seen coaches use Miami to spring to the next desired position. Butch Davis, Dennis Erickson, Jimmy Johnson, etc. Guys come he to launch their careers. I don't think Whipple can do that in Philadelphia as the QB coach for Kevin Kolb. If Whipple takes the Eagles job, his job is to groom Kevin Kolb and under Andy Reid, I don't think he'll be moving up until Kolb has things figured out.

4. What is the future of Andy Reid? Like McNabb, his future hangs in limbo at this point. Obviously something need to be done before draft day but who knows what happens at this point. There are just too many questions surrounding Philadelphia right now and not enough answers.

5. Randy Shannon has a ton of get young talent and is ready to move forward with operations. Shannon will step aside and give Whipple 100% full control of the offense obviously. Whipple will be THE guy in Miami and will be in charge of winning football games. My biggest question about Whipple is can he recruit? With only 10 days left until National Signing Day, recruiting isn't that important for Whipple at this point so if he can produce lots of exciting offense, he has a major selling point for kids next season.

Whipple has until Monday to make a choice. After that, if Whipple says no, I believe the search will continue or Shannon will turn to whoever is next.

Now, it seems to me that Whipple has been the guy for a while so I have an interesting question. If Whipple was on campus yesterday and Shannon wasn't because he was still on his West Coast swing, and Langsdorf was never really a candidate according to Oregon newspapers, then why was Shannon on the West Coast to begin with? The obvious answer is because he was looking for a Defensive Coordinator...but who? Ken Norton Jr.? Stoops in Arizona?

Thoughts?
 
Honestly, I'd really like the hire. But he has the potential to climb up the rung in Philly too, probably could be their OC in a year or so.

I'm hoping it's him. Better than anything else, though I would have loved the guy from Oregon State.
 
Personally, I wanted Langsdorf, Chud, or Steve Logan...Logan was my #1 choice. But Whipple's done wonders for McNabb and Big Ben, so he can't be all that bad.
 
I like the decision, if it comes true. There is an interesting article on Rivals about the situation:

A third factor is believed to include an overall commitment at UM to a future with Randy Shannon and his two new coordinators of choice. Three-year contracts at amounts higher than UM has paid in the past could be required to land a top coach or coaches. It might also require some budget realignment that would lead to Shannon being his own defensive coordinator.


It seems that he just wants what everybody wants....job security. It goes on to say that Whipple could be holding out hope for a job on Cowher's staff next year if Cowher gets back in to coaching.
 
The only name I've heard thrown around was that one of the reasons Randy was on the West Coast was because he wanted to talk with Ken Norton Jr. Randy has a connection to Ken Norton Jr. via Jimmy Johnson obviously. However, I don't think it's very likely that Norton comes here. Shannon and Norton simply had a "small" discussion from what I was told. No formal offer was made. I wouldn't read too much into it because I think it's a very longshot for Norton to come East. His ties to the West Coast are simply too strong in my opinion.
 
Good stuff. I would love to see Whipple on board, especially soon so he can start working with these kids. I really hope we play to our potential this year vs a difficult schedule.

CedarPhin, I respect your strong & solid opinions about this team, so Im glad to see that you like the guy as well.
