I'm not into baseball all that much, but like any other sport I root Florida (specially S. Florida teams).

My question:

I keep reading that the marlins need to win out to have go to the playoffs because we're 4.5 behind in the WC race with 9 games to go.

Is this accurate? We have 2 more games against the Phillies, if we beat them we'll only be 2.5 games behind with 7 games left, right? Don't we catch up a whole game if we lose and the team we're chasing falls?

Can someone explain how this works to me? I though I had a handle on it but everywhere I read that the Marlins are no longer competing for a playoff spot, if we sweep the Phillies its still a win-out situation for the rest of the season for the WC spot?

In theory they don't have to win every game to make the playoffs, but every loss only increases the already astronomical odds. Coolstandings has their playoff odds at 2.8%, which should give you a pretty good idea what they're up against. Lose tonight and that number halves.

Marlins are 5 out with 7 to go.

Thought it is the Mets they trail, it's pretty unlikely they'll make it. They've certainly had a good year though.

They play the Mutts to close the season out.

I'd put their chances at slim and none...

...and slim's gone.

Maybe they should have pulled the trigger on the Manny deal, considering how many close games they've lost since the trade deadline.

They have played very well this season, they should be proud of their effort. Most people expected them to finish in fourth place, or last place in the NL East as one of the worst teams in baseball, and that wasn't the case. As usual they have a bright future. I hope they can help my Phils out and knock the Mets out of the playoffs this weekend.

Yea that blown call on the Cantu slide Saturday night pretty much killed this teams chances. If we win that game, who knows how things are on Sunday, and the whole of this week. U hate to see that.

Fantastic season none the less, and I'm looking forward to next season.

I don't know if the Manny deal would have made a difference, I'm sure it would have, but it wasn't a guarantee that we would have made the playoffs, and I didn't want to give up so much young potential for a guy that would have been a 3 month rental. We didn't have enough pieces in place to make that kind of a deal. If the bullpen was settled with a solid closer, maybe we attempt the deal.

I tell u one thing, I like the catcher, Baker . . . I like the infield . . . Maybin in CF . . . some questions marks on the corner outfielders . . . but we have Ross, Hammer, and Hermida . . . I like Amezaga . . . we have some youngsters still to see . . . and the starting pitching, if it stays the same, will be BEASTLY next season if healthy.

Hey we win every six years anyways . . . 2009 season will be the season where the Canes, Dolphins, Marlins and Heat win the championship . . . restoring glory to South Florida sports . . . . YES.
