While watching Coach Philbin's introductory presser from a couple of months ago, there was one key phrase that seemed to echo throughout. In Jeff Ireland's opening statement, he describes Philbin by saying, "He's a leader, a man with high character one that embodies a spirit of a winner." Later on, Philbin addresses the question on what exactly it will take for this team to succeed: "we must acquire excellent football players who are men of high character that possess an insatiable will to succeed." And then he shares his views on what it will take to bring the Lombardi trophy back to Miami: "we have to get excellent football players, high character individuals, and men that have a strong, strong will to succeed. That's the plan."

I'm sure by now you've noticed the underlying theme here. I'm sure you figured out the kind of man that Coach Philbin is and what he believes he must surround himself with in order to succeed. And that is acquiring men of high character. Brandon Marshall obviously doesn't fit that bill and I believe this latest nightclub incident is the straw that broke the camel's back.

Make sure to continue to pay close attention to the personnel moves in free agency and the draft. Philbin is trying to start from a clean slate, molding the team in his own high character image. Marshall was the first, and most likely the biggest casualty in Philbin's crusade for players of the utmost character. Hopefully, the high character individuals trump the highly talented.

Good post...and you beat me to it. Phibin's opening comments in his into presser were the first things I thought of when I heard about Marshall being traded.

Sparano also said the same thing when he came on board. Ireland / Sparano were all about "high character" guys in 2008. Well, when you aren't winning, all that goes out the window and you start signing guys like Brandon Marshall in hopes of sparking something.

You know who also loved "high character" guys? Cam Cameron.

But every knew coach pretty much says this..and gm for that matter..

Word on NFL Network is that not only did the #Dolphins wanted to trade Marshall, but it seems Marshall asked for a trade.

Awesome. So despite the team probably going 4-12 next year it's all good. Each player is a swell guy who is a model citizen in the community.

it might have something to do with it, but i bet big money marshall wanted out. all he talked about for that last couple months is how he missed cutler

I to it seems like a rebuilding process. That is what I see ATM. No qb and no 1 WR. You can get exactly what he wants but that doesn't mean the players he picks will be what WE as a team need on the field. Ill buy this when I feel we can compete in our division and right now I feel we can't.

Ill be patient and wait till july but as of right now its hard to watch FA.

how bout hartline dumping his truck on the side of the road after a night of drinking and fleeing the scene. is that high character?
philip merling beating his wife up is that high character?

Not saying that this philosophy will automatically translate to wins and Lombardi trophies, I don't have that kind of clairvoyance. Just making the observation that the philosophy has a lot to do with hasty jettison of a productive player for us. Whether or not the high character model is one that Philbin sticks to and ends up paying dividends obviously remains to be seen.
