So long as we keep Capers as DC, I would love Martz as head coach. The guy is an offensive genius, and say what you want about him winning with Vermeil's players, but he got to a Super Bowl as a head coach, and his teams (when healthy) were always in the playoffs. That's better than anything we can se around here lately. And wouldn't you like to see Chambers in an offensive system where he is actually utilized properly?

And for those who want to cite how his turnover margin was always horrible and other things, remember, coaches usually learn a lot from their first coaching stint, e.g. Bill Belichick was awful with the Browns, prolly learned a lot from that experience, and we all know the rest. There's no doubt in my mind that Martz deserves another head coaching opportunity.

And a final note. I'm tired of getting average NFL coaches who knows a little bit about everything and are conservative. It doesn't work. You need guys at head coach that are unique and special. Belichick - defensive genius; Gruden - offensive mastermind; Cowher - tough as nails. I know its hard to judge these things sometimes BEFORE the guy is a head coach, but we know all we need to know about Martz in this regard. He's a special offensive guy. And special guys are what this team needs.

Just to prove my point, here's Martz coaching record in St. Louis:

2000: 10-6 (playoffs)
2001: 14-2 (SB loss)
2002: 7-9
2003: 12-4 (playoffs)
2004: 8-8 (playoffs)
2005: 2-3, before his health issues

Everyone needs to realize that he didn't lose his job because of performance, but because of issues between him and the front office. He's also great with QBs (Warner, Bulger, now Kitna), which is exactly what this team needs.

I live just outside of St. Louis. I got to watch every Rams game during the Mike Martz era. Do not hire him as head coach. Don't get me wrong, he'd be my first choice at Offensive Coordinator, but his game management sucks. Questionable challenges, burning timeouts, etc. etc. . Also, he completely ignores special teams. In a matter of 2 years St. Louis went from having one of the best special teams w/ Vermiel to one of the worst. It plagued those teams. The Rams became "undisciplined" in every facet of the game except offense under his leadership. I think he's probably the best at drawing up schemes and stuff, but he's not the total package.

Amen... I agree. I think we need to go in a DIFFERENT direction for a change, an OFFENSIVE direction. Our current top-of-the-league defense will still be in place for another 2-3 years, so with that I believe we strike on offense with a coach and the first round of the draft. We have the recievers (I still believe Chambers is a true #1 reciever, he was in the wrong system)Booker and Hagan are very physical #2 recievers, we'll have not one but two of the best running backs in the NFL, and Oline that has continually progressed, and I think we draft a QB in the 1st round. With that said, we should be set for 07. I just read that if we would've scored 21 points a game, we wouldve won 11 games this year. WE NEED OFFENSE!!

Martz is out of St. Louis, and look at the team now. They supposedly got a great coach in Linehan but they really dissapointed (not that i should talk being a fins fan). They went what, 8-8 in the NFC! With all that talent on offense and in one of the weakest divisions. I'm all for Martz...for a change.. We already have a great defensive mind in Capers to continue to coach that amazing D.

Like I said, guys can learn a lot from the first head coaching experience. Martz is a smart guy; he prolly realizes everything you just said, and if he gets another shot, I'm sure he wold not neglect special teams. Game management and challenges...those are weak points, and are very circumstancial.

No to Martz as an HC and yes as a OC. Martz is a very arrogant HC and doest care what people think. I like him as a OC and thats it and he wont be leaving detroit anytime soon unless hes a HC somewhere..

What does that mean...he's arrogant? You're just making personality judgements about the guy without looking at the results he produced.

And by the way, a little arrogance in a coach never hurts.

Some more results under Martz:

Offensive Rank (Total Yds)
2000: 1
2001: 1
2002: 9
2003: 7
2004: 6

So long as we keep Capers as DC, this is the guy we need.

Challenges and game management are weak points? How many games come down to a "play or two". What I was alluding to is that those Martz teams played sloppy football that was painful to watch at times. It's difficult to watch a team repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot. Trust me, you don't want Martz as anything but an Offensive Coordinator.

And people were whinning that we didn't run the ball enough, what would it be like with Martz who's throwing like 70% of the time. Martz is a bonehead as head coach, I think he waste some good years for the Rams by trying to re invent the game with is wild play calling.

My choice Pete Carroll, or Jim Mora Jr.

What standard are you comparing him too though? You say they played sloppy football, yet they made the playoffs every year he was there except once. And his offensive ranks speak for themselves. And if you're worried about the defense, trust me, Capers will take of that.

To clarify, when I said that game management and challenges were weak points, what I meant was the following. When you look back at a season, you hardly ever say, "Oh, we lost a game becase of game management." Usually it's, "We lost the game because of poor play-calling" or "We weren't aggressive enough on defense", etc. Game management and challenges are like 5% of the game; there's tons more stuff more important, stuff that Martz is very very good at.

MIKE MARTZ IS A JOKER . never in a million years would i support his signing...is this serious?
