Harrison’s Indy days are done

Adam Schefter

Everyone keeps focusing on WR Terrell Owens‘ future with the Cowboys. But the more pressing issues surround Colts WR Marvin Harrison.

It’s no longer a question of if Harrison, 36, will be let go. It has become a question of when. It will happen in the coming days, certainly before the new league year starts a week from Friday, but few are sure exactly when.

But make no mistake: It is happening. The Colts no longer can afford to carry Harrison, who is scheduled to have a $13.4 million number for an Indianapolis team that is starving for more salary-cap room to deal with free-agents-to-be such as CB Kelvin Hayden.

If the Colts were to release Harrison, his $13.4 million number instantly would come off the books, saving the team $7 million against the cap. Harrison still would count $6.4 million in dead money, but more importantly, there would be the $7 million savings.

Plus, the Colts have been bracing for this day, drafting Anthony Gonzalez in the first round and grooming young WRs Roy Hall and Pierre Garcon.

The Colts’ first-round draft pick in 1996, Harrison will finish his Indianapolis career with 1,102 catches for 14,580 yards and 128 touchdowns.

It was a great career. The last chapter soon will be written.

It sucks he won't be in Indy anymore, its his home, anywhere else would just seem wrong. I believe 100% that he can still play hard though, I don't think he is finished quite yet.

It would seem quite strange to see him play somewhere else like you said.
But they will obviously go young, and he will not take a salary cut. Sad situation but that's fact.

Hope he continues to play.

Looks like the Colts will give him what he wants. I guess I thought they would have been able to restructure his contract. I mean, he is a first ballet hall of famer, but not the highest paid WR this season like his contract would have been for. I can't believe Manning didn't try to step in and help work something out.

I just watched the press conference by the colts offically announcing Harrison's release. They had nothing but nice things to say about Marvin but noone has explained why he is being released. I get the impression that it is something bigger then just money. Niether Peyton or Marvin was at this presser. seems like theres an internal problem that no one is willing to bring to light.

It will be intresting to hear what both of those will havve to say, if they say anything at all.

I bet he goes to Phily to play with his boy McNabb.... if McNabb decides to stay.

His salary was so huge, it's a good enough reason to get rid of him. Maybe they're just so badly off in their attempts to get under the cap they had to let him go. I guess it might be that he believes he can still be a premier receiver in the league and just couldn't come close in agreeing his wages.

It'll be very odd to see him in another team's colours but that's how it goes. I hope he does better than someone else did last year when he changed teams at the end of his career.

I get it that he is commanding a huge salary and his performance has declined post injury. I just found it pretty strange that Manning wasnt at the presser to at least publically announce that Marvin will be missed by him, and to give his best wishes to a guy that has had a big part in mannings hof careeer. I dont find it as strange that Harrison wasnt at the presser, but I did find it to be a little peculiar that he did not show up. It leaves me with the impression that there is some bad feelings rolling around internally. I thought it was classy of the organazation to come out and wish him the best of luck and express their regrets that they could not come to some mutally acceptable offer. I thought it was classy that they also publically made it known that he was invited to retire as a colt and be inducted into their ring of fame. I think they handled it correctly.
