Let me start by saying that i do not know much about Jared Gaither. However i still think we should take a look at him. He is not elegible to play this season for Maryland so he declared to enter the supplemental draft. His size is incredible 6'9 350 lbs. with reported quick feet. I do think we should invest in him if his workouts impress. Maybe even a 3rd round pick. That way we can move Carey back to his original position which i think he will be a stud in at RT. I do believe that Carey can get the job done at LT, i trust Houck, if he believes i believe. However i think it wouldn't hurt to scout this player deeply. what do you guys think.

by the way cut me some slack, this is the first time i start a topic.

Nice first thread....Good topic..

But I have to disagree on the Carey part. He was drafted to be our LT. He has the athleticism to play that position. He does, however, tend to learn new positions slowly so we may have to be more patient with him...

As to Gaither...while he's a physical monster and seemed to play decently at Maryland, the fact is he flunked out of school and that is why he's entering the draft. What does that tell us about him ? Not necessarily that he isn't smart or can't handle the position he plays, but it seems to tell us that he may be somewhat immature and need some time to develop. He's just too much of a question for my taste. We have plenty of guys with questions, particularly along the OL...we don't need another there, IMHO...

It's known houck likes big tackles and Gaither definitely is that. He's also young and would make great material for houck to mold as he sees fit. I would be very excited if we landed him. He's projected to go top 10 next year, which in my mind would justify a second round pick in the supplemental draft (alot can happen in a year). A second is a bit high, but stud LTs come along only so often... I think it's worth a bit of a gamble. And having carey back at RT would be another huge plus in my mind.

All right, that's my two cents

Jared gaither is a great talent. He was heavily recruited out of High school for basketball by Gary Williams. He would have been the starting center for MD had he decided to play b-ball. He decided to concentrate on football and signed with MD over some big time programs. He only started playing football in his soph. year in high school. Md has higher academic standards than the NCAA. Many players cannot get into MD because of this. He had to go to a prep school to qualify. His physical skills are legit. He ran a 4.78 coming out of high school weighting 316lbs. He since has gained additional strength and I heard he increased his 40 time in college. He has great footwork and very quick hands. His biggest problem is he is a sensitive guy and might not take extreme pressure well. He could have grown some in college I don't know haven't been around him for awhile. I doubt Miami will select him but they COULD do a lot worse in the reg. draft. If you can grab him around 4/5/6 it would be well worth it. I know we might not have a 4/5 depending on the Green situation. He can play both the LT & RT

Thats my thoughts exactly. Just about everyone that declares for the supplemental draft is damaged goods in some way. It appears that Gaither is either too dumb or immature to even remain eligible in school. By no means is intelligence necessary to play football, but he doesn't really sound like a guy I would want on my team.

What do you know about this guy to call him dumb. I would be willing to bet that he is smarter than you are. I'm sure you have several degrees though. You have no idea what is degree field is in, or other factor that go into finsihing school. Take a look at all the players that left school early are they all "dumb". Guy get a life and stop making rude and mean comments about someone you know nothing about.

Maybe if he was on Dean's list with a 3.7 GPA like I currently have, he wouldn't be declaring for the supplemental draft. By the way, I'm an architecture major which is the hardest program to get into at Virginia Tech.

It is a well known fact that Gaither is academically ineligible at Maryland this year due to poor grades. The only reason he declared was because he is academically ineligible. If he was smart enough to pass his classes, we wouldn't be discussing this right now.

But whatever, if you want to keep on personally attacking me, by all means go right ahead.

The last guy we picked up in the Supplemental Draft that looked impressive on the stats sheet didn't turn out too well because of the sensitive tag and ended up crying the first day and look where he is now. However if he can start at LT for the next 10 years I'm all for it. And to the Tech guy, I bet Gaither wouldn't be inelegible at Tech because we know where their acedemic standards on athletes are.

Unless you're the dean of admissions or with the athletic department I'm pretty sure you don't have a clue, and neither do I. Go to any major college football program and I'm sure you'll find sketchy recruiting, grading tactics. Maurice Clarett anyone?

Sorry but he has the IQ of a coconut and usually
the offensive lineman score highest on the wonderlick test of anyone
on the team.

Gaither has had numerious problems relating to his lack of desire or intelect
so I would stay away

When did Maryland become an academic powerhouse?????

Actually Maryland is a fairly good school. the ACC has pretty decent academic standards. I went to University of maryland and its definately not among the bottom wrung of NCAA academics. The university of miami which produces alot of NFL players ussually has some of th worst wonderlic scores of any of the major schools.
