I was thinking back to how I was feeling about the Dolphins draft prospects this time last year. At the time I was lamenting Matt Leinart's decision to stay another year at USC, which meant that we weren't going to get a shot at drafting Alex Smith.

Instead we were going to have to "settle" for either Ronnie Brown or Braylon Edwards. So, we got Brown. Even though I'm not yet sold that Ronnie is going to be a great classic runner, he did show last year that he does enough things well that he will be a more than adequate starting RB in the NFL for a number of years.

But if things had been different last year and Leinart had declared himself eligible for the draft, we very likely would have drafted Alex Smith instead of Ronnie. We would have probably drafted another RB later in the draft and counted on Ricky coming back and being the starter.

Fast forward a year and our QB is now Daunte Culpepper and we have Ronnie at RB. Had Leinart come out last year we would probably be entering this season with Smith at QB (who did not look good at all last year...albeit with a terrible supporting cast) and lord knows who at RB.

Sure is funny how things work out.

yeah that is pretty crazy now that you mention it. I guess it worked out for the best because we have the best of both worlds atm...being with Ronnie and Daunte and Ricky if he comes back. Good point :)

i know, right? thats why my philosphy onthis type of stuff, is to let it be...no matter how many times you bang these boards, or how many polls you create, it is going to be what it is..

but, using hindsight, omg am i gklad we got ronnie ( btw, go ahead and be sold on him, hes that good)...

im sooo glad this things worked out how they did because if we had drafted alex smith we would be in the top 5 pick in this years draft but instead we are looking foward to greatness

Coulda been possible even after drafting Alex Smith, Frerotte came in as a temp starter for a season or 2 while Smith learned the ropes. But this is all coulda woulda, and I won't say shoulda because I am a Ronnie fan and glad we got him.

and plus a running back can make an immidiate impact thats been proven, qb usually have to learn a few years, i dont know what happend to big ben, but that is one in a million. to the point now, with an aging defence im glad we have a veteran qb and dont have to raise a young one right now. things have their way of working out and they did

well i dont think leinart we be good in the NFL. HE WILL ANOTHER kEN DORSEY.OR LEAF GOOD in college bad in the NFL

Not necessarily. Alex Smith was a rookie. The vast majority of NFL rookie QB's have mediocre years when they are thrust in as starters. Smith was also cursed with an incredible lack of talent at the skill positions.
Those of you who are writing him off already as a bust know nothing about football.
Now, I'm not suggesting that you did (write him off), however, there have numerous posts in the past calling him a bust or saying he stinks.

People want instant results and a guy like Ben coming in to a perfect situation and managing a game to perfection only puts more pressure on young Qb's and GM's to pull the plug on them if they struggle. If Smith gets time to develop I think he'll be a very good Qb. SF needs to build around him they have an absolutely pathetic supporting cast.

Even if Smith ends up being a good qb, I don't think anyone would rather have him than Daunte.

Dorsey isn't bad at all. He just has had terrible coaching in the NFL. Had someone commited to Dorsey, he would have turned out a decent QB in the NFL. He has shown some sparks last season; one being the 49ers vs Seahawks game (Steve Young's HOF ceremony game).

I am glad we did not get Alex Smith....I think RB will have a much longer and successful career. Had we drafted a rookie QB it would be years before he was decent and we now have DC who hopefully will get over his injury and be an all pro again.
