I was thinking back to how I was feeling about the Dolphins draft prospects this time last year. At the time I was lamenting Matt Leinart's decision to stay another year at USC, which meant that we weren't going to get a shot at drafting Alex Smith.
Instead we were going to have to "settle" for either Ronnie Brown or Braylon Edwards. So, we got Brown. Even though I'm not yet sold that Ronnie is going to be a great classic runner, he did show last year that he does enough things well that he will be a more than adequate starting RB in the NFL for a number of years.
But if things had been different last year and Leinart had declared himself eligible for the draft, we very likely would have drafted Alex Smith instead of Ronnie. We would have probably drafted another RB later in the draft and counted on Ricky coming back and being the starter.
Fast forward a year and our QB is now Daunte Culpepper and we have Ronnie at RB. Had Leinart come out last year we would probably be entering this season with Smith at QB (who did not look good at all last year...albeit with a terrible supporting cast) and lord knows who at RB.
Sure is funny how things work out.
