Moore, 27, will probably have to wait a little while longer for that opportunity. Moore, who signed a two-year deal at the start of free agency last month, is firmly entrenched as the back-up to starter Chad Henne.
Even though Moore has 13 starts in his four-year NFL career, compiling a 7-6 record with 16 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano has quelled any talk of a quarterback competition.
Not only is Henne the starter, Sparano said, but he doesn't plan to give Moore any snaps with the first-team offense this week in practice or in Friday's pre-season home game against Carolina.
Moore, who signed with Miami because of his familiarity with Sparano and General Manager Jeff Ireland - both were with the Cowboys when Moore was in camp there - said he understands the situation.
"I wanted to come in and compete, (but Henne's) been the guy here for however many years," Moore said Monday. "Two years ago I was the No. 3 on opening day and I ended up playing the (last five games), so you never know, especially at quarterback."
Moore had better statistics than Henne in the pre-season opener at Atlanta. Moore completed 11 of 18 passes for 123 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while Henne was just 4-of-8 for 77 yards with one touchdown and two picks.
But Sparano pointed out that Moore compiled his numbers against the Falcons' backups; Henne played against the starters.
"On the surface it's going to look like Matt did way more good things than Chad," Sparano said. "But there was enough things in there to Matt's 36 plays, I believe it was, that needed to be corrected as well."
