I thought this was some positive news about Roth, and hopefully with a year under his belt he will play more and progress in Saban/Capers D.

Matt Roth Improving

TSN reports Miami Dolphins 2005 second-round draft pick DE Matt Roth has impressed coaches so far this offseason. Last year, Roth tried to get by on his intensity alone and tended to neutralize himself. He would often run straight at blockers, thinking he could bull rush them and set up his outside moves that way. Roth discovered that he isn't strong enough to do that at this level. In addition, his short arms make it hard for him to play with leverage. This year, Roth has focused on using his speed more and then attacking linemen on an angle to get them off balance.

Good to hear. Hopefully he will have a big role this season. With him and Bowens backing up JT and Carter, I feel great about our depth at DE.

I don't see Roth blossoming into anything more then an average DE in the NFL. His arms are too darn short. NFL Offensive Tackles will neutralize him. I hope I am wrong.

I agree that he could add depth for us for years to come.

Good to hear, than ks for the info. I like this kid, short arms or not, he's got skills and good intensity. Hope he develops well.

His speed? The few times I saw him play I kept think, "boy is he slow" It was like watching Herman Munster run thru the backfield.

i think roth is more of a situational pass rusher...more of a 3rd down rusher...kinda like trace armstrong used to be...hopefully he can produce like trace used too...

I hope he does better i mean he barly played last year :tantrum:

If not we can always make him into one bad *** SS hahaha

I stood next to Matt during the Draft Party at Dolphins Stadium. It was obvious that he has bulked up from last year. In fact, I would say that of all the players I saw at the party, he had obviously changed the most.

I think with his increased knowledge and strength, he will continue to improve as a run stopper and good situational pass rusher. I think Matt can produce 6-7 sacks for us this year and shut down the run.

I am hopeful that Matt's motor and technique will get him our 6-7 sacks per year. I.e., his motor and improved technique will make up for his short arms, tweener size, lack of speed, and top line athleticism.

I wouldn't compare him to Trace, because Trace was an excellent athlete. I don't see the same athleticism from Matt. But Matt is a warrior and I love that attitude. If he becomes a technician and worker bee under the tutelage of Danny Quinn, he could be a decent guy in the rotation, albeit not a pro bowler.

The best news is that Matt understands what he needs to do to get better, and he is working at it.

Basically, my above summary is the complete opposite of Manny Wright.
