I know right now he basically is basically out of his element at linebacker and many on here have voiced their concern about his abilities, BUT once again he made a play in the game by ripping that ball out of the hands of sammy morris.

Me personally I like the guy but don't know if he will ever really develop into a good OLB. Maybe he is just used to rushing the passer while in college on the line but as an OLB he has to be able to drop into coverage if needed as well as play with restraint. He seems to make plays at times but sometimes I just see him all over the field.

I have to really start to pay attention to see if parcells is running a 1 "gap" or 2 "gap" 3-4 system. To me it seems that both langford and merling are atheletic enough to play a 2 gap with a 3 or even 5 technique, but with porter able to blitz on any given play, we could also be using ferguson and merling/lanford in a 1 gap system. That leaves us to draft or get 2 other linebackers in free agency (not sure crowder plays with enough restraint) and decide if roth is going to stay at olb. Get another stud at ILB along side crowder and see if roth "gets" it at olb and man we could have a good linebacking core if porter has a few years left. I see parcells opting for the biggest nastiest NT in the draft if we can find one. I mean a ted washington type guy. That is EXACTLY what we need in this system to play the "0" technique.

To make it even better, roth could rotate to the d-line turning it into a 4-3 at any time. I see us doing this now at times. I have also seen what appears us in a 5-2 and dropping back into a 4-2-5 zone at times.

Ironically that being said, I also can see merling, holiday, ferguson and lanford utilizing a potent 4-3 scheme but I doubt porter, crowder and roth excel at anything other than pass rushing and run support. I cringe at their covering skills...

Either way, roth makes plays and I would like to see him stick around for a few years to see what could transpire. He is an animal on the field and I love his fiery competitive nature. We need that.

Hey good post, but you may want to dumb it down a lil so more here can understand what your saying :) and i'm only half way joking.......... that's the sad part.

We run a 2 gap 3-4.

From all the games so far most teams try to run away from Ruth, and thats the most importain thing for a olb to do on that side.

I think what we need more then a ILB, is a guy who can get after the QB when we play are 4-2-5 or 3rd downs.I mean if we still had JT i think we win that game on sunday.

Also Akin Ayodele is a guy Bill wanted and got from the FA, then some how got him when ha came to Miami, so i don't think he's looking to replace a guy he payed a'lot of money to in FA then traded for again to get.

roth sucks. yes he has made a couple big plays, but that doesnt make him good. hes horrible out there, cant rush the passer and hasnt been good in the run game(which he should dominated)

Great post. My opinion is that Roth does a great job setting the corner, an ok job of pass rush, but a poor job of covering. The coaching staff has increased his trade value with starting 4-3 DE and starting 3-4 OLB on his resume. I expect they will try to shop him this offseason. If there are no takers, then he will add to the roster because of his flexibility. I do not believe he is a long term answer because of his coverage limitations.

Im a fan of all our drafted players, Roth is no exception regardless of the ragiem that drafted them. parcells has cut lots of people he brought in already an ayodele will be no different he hasnt played to his contracts value, Granted in limited oppertunitys but he'll be released at seasons end of that im fairly sure.

..............................ah its good to be back!

One of the BEST Lbers in the NFL SUCKED (DWare)in coverage his first+ season. It takes time for a converted DE to learn and react instinctively to their coverage responsibilities.

Not that Roth will ever be DWare, but the comments about coverage are eerily similar to those posted about Ware on the Dallas forums his first season.

Not really. The trade was for Fasano and Dallas decided to throw someone else in for salary cap reasons. We asked for Bobby Carpenter and they gave us Ayodele. Unless we can get Maulauga, I think we may go after Carpenter as our new ILB.

I like Matt Roth as a player because he's got the non-stop motor that never stops. There has been several plays this year that Roth has made to help out of the defense that people don't give enough credit to.

1. The Brett Favre fumble in game 1 vs. the Jets- He intially misses Favre because of a good fake but comes back to the ball and strips it. Another player would have not made that play because they probably would have stopped chasing.

2. The San Diego Chargers game- Made tons of plays in that game that made you start to think you might have something to work with in Roth. He had like 4 tackles, 1 sack, and was stout against the run all day long.

3. The Seahawks game- He chases down Julius Jones on a big run preventing a touchdown that was almost for sure going to happen.

4. The Pats game this past sunday- The strip that gave us back the ball to take the lead on the Pats.

He makes a handfull of plays but the thing that people should remember is that he's still learing to play the position. I think we need to sign him to a one-year deal and you'll see that after a year of playing the position he's going to be a monster.

We do run a two gap defense but not all the time. At one of Sparano's press confrences he was quoted as saying "It's more similar to what the Chargers run and what they ran in Dallas." Vonnie Holiday also said that it's not just two gap because it gives them some flexibility to move and shoot different gaps. Dom Capers played alot of two gap last year which is what was getting the linemen manhandled.

Revisiting Matt Roth.....he still blows. He has played a couple good games, but really he is a backup player who is starting due to a lack of overall talent on our D.

I like Roth. I think he needs time (maybe more than about 5 months worth...) to develop better technique from a LBer standpoint before we should call for his head. He makes plays, he has a nonstop motor that some guys on this defense seem to lack the ability or fire too. Keep him around for more a little more to see what we've got with this is what I say.

Sometimes I really wish there was a thumbs down button for certains posts lol.

I like Roth but he is very hot n cold. It seems like some games he makes an impact and others he is contained. Im rooting for him to suceede.

Agreed but he is converting to a new position. I think he is a play maker though. For some reason he reminds me of romanowski without the roids. Maybe not the pure talent but rather the crazy all go motor...
