Where is the reset button?
I know right now he basically is basically out of his element at linebacker and many on here have voiced their concern about his abilities, BUT once again he made a play in the game by ripping that ball out of the hands of sammy morris.
Me personally I like the guy but don't know if he will ever really develop into a good OLB. Maybe he is just used to rushing the passer while in college on the line but as an OLB he has to be able to drop into coverage if needed as well as play with restraint. He seems to make plays at times but sometimes I just see him all over the field.
I have to really start to pay attention to see if parcells is running a 1 "gap" or 2 "gap" 3-4 system. To me it seems that both langford and merling are atheletic enough to play a 2 gap with a 3 or even 5 technique, but with porter able to blitz on any given play, we could also be using ferguson and merling/lanford in a 1 gap system. That leaves us to draft or get 2 other linebackers in free agency (not sure crowder plays with enough restraint) and decide if roth is going to stay at olb. Get another stud at ILB along side crowder and see if roth "gets" it at olb and man we could have a good linebacking core if porter has a few years left. I see parcells opting for the biggest nastiest NT in the draft if we can find one. I mean a ted washington type guy. That is EXACTLY what we need in this system to play the "0" technique.
To make it even better, roth could rotate to the d-line turning it into a 4-3 at any time. I see us doing this now at times. I have also seen what appears us in a 5-2 and dropping back into a 4-2-5 zone at times.
Ironically that being said, I also can see merling, holiday, ferguson and lanford utilizing a potent 4-3 scheme but I doubt porter, crowder and roth excel at anything other than pass rushing and run support. I cringe at their covering skills...
Either way, roth makes plays and I would like to see him stick around for a few years to see what could transpire. He is an animal on the field and I love his fiery competitive nature. We need that.
