MORE COWBELL!!!
.....Ive been having a similar discussion elsewhere and I havent posted on the main boards in awhile so I am attempting to bring an intelligent conversation here....... lets see how this goes.
Matt Roth....... one of my "interesting" draft picks of last year. Currently Matt Roth is a "tweener" imo and I really dont know where he fits in. Last year he really didnt get much playing time so we all dont have much to judge him by.
As a 3-4 DE, Roth needs to gain weight and work on his technique. Carter signed a 5 year deal but the last 3 years were backloaded so its reasonable to think this year OR next year might be the last years we have Kevin Carter around...... was Roth drafted as Carter's replacement? In college, Roth got away with having a motor and great strength and was able to just plow over college Olinemen to get to the QB..... not so much in the NFL, especially a guy of his size. Therefore is the plan for Roth to have him put on 15 lbs and take Carter's spot in 1-2 years? Personally, this is what I would HOPE for Roth.
OR is the plan for Roth something else. A few members on here suggested he MIGHT be JT's backup..... although our current depth chart now shows otherwise. A handful of members have said/posted that he might lose some weight and be the hybrid OE type player in the future.....
Personally, I think the only way Roth cracks the starting roster is if he can add at LEAST 15 lbs in the offseason and work on his technique. Roth was nowhere near your idea 3-4 DE when we drafted him and needs to do a lot of work to fit the mold for this year.
Thoughts? Was Matt Roth a project draft? Or a flat out waste of a 2nd rounder? Either way, Roth, Vickerson, and Wright are three players I look forward to watching in the offseason to see if they all progress into the mold... DE, NT, DT. We might have our future Dline taking shape this offseason......
Come draft time, it might be important to know where Roth stands so we can more properly address the teams needs come draft time.
