Matt Roth

i dont think he is ready to be a starter yet but he could get a considerable amount of playing time

Be expecting Roth to have an improved year this year. He came in this offseason with a better attitude and he add a few more pounds on him. The problem with him last season was that he didn't come off the line quick enough and he didn't use his hands well to get away from the OL. That should be improved this year. Hopefully.

what kind of role do you expect him to have???

I think Kevin Carter is still an above average pro in front of him so advancement will be hard. That said, I would hope to see him more regularly in the rotation.

He is one of the guys I am especially looking forward to seeing how they have progressed when camp opens.

I'd say the same role he has last year. Saban and Capers will try to find him a way to get more involved, but that will be hard to do when you have Taylor, Carter and Bowens as the other DE's.

Was interesting that he seemed to come in a lot of goal line situations. I think you might see him in short yardage situations this year as well. I think with a season under his belt and he'll be able to start to become a little more involved. He has alot of experienced players to learn from.

What is he capable of this year?

I think he will have pretty much the same role as last year, He is a high motor guy with little in the way of moves. I hope he can improve and contribute this year, but lets not get carried away like we did at the beginning of last year. He is still a year or two away from starting IMHO.

Roth won't start but will be much more productive this year. He's relatively new to DE and this will be year 4 at the position and he had to adjust to the speed of the game and the mental part of DE.

Saban in an interivew even mention who he was impressed with Roth's improvement since last year and that he was one of the most improved from last years team. I thiink he mentioned 3 and I know Roth was one the 3, Ronnie the other and I forget who one was. Being an Iowa fan I love watching Roth take over a games while at Iowa. Saw a few Miami games and Roth looked very slow and unsure. Can gaurantee you Roth will become a fan favorite and will be much improved from last year.

I remember reading something also that Roth was training in Iowa City with coach Doyle on his quickness and strength. Doyle is an AWESOME trainer and can work miracles and is well repected his field.
