The signing of Cam Wake makes Matt Roth spot at OLB in jeopardy? or does it?
If we put Roth at ILB I think his skill set would be better suited for him to excel next to C. Crowder...Opinions

I don't think Matt Roth will ever be a star in this league. That ship has sailed. But he's not a horrible option to keep around for depth. He could play ILB, but really, we haven't even seen Wake play in the NFL. Roth might still be better than him. Wake will be forced to do something in the NFL that he never had to do in the CFL: Play the run consistently.

I think Wake is to be Porter's replacement. Roth is better suited for the strong side because of his strength. Strangely enough, I think it may actually be Quentin Moses that pushes Roth. I'm not sure why, just kind of a feeling.

No offense to any of you, but when Miami signed Erik Walden last year Quentin Moses was not seen again. As for Roth I think alot of you dont give him any credit. The kid has improved his stats every year and did a good job last year for it being his first year and never playing the position. The Phins have to be happy with him cause outside of Wake no one else signed. Even if JT signs he is 35 years old and will split time with Roth and Porter. JT will also have to work his *** off because nothing will be given to him.

I think Wake means Anderson is history...not Roth. Wake will come in on passing downs, like Anderson did last year.

Roth is not quick enough or agile enough to play ILB. As an ILB he would need to pursue the ball carrier and fight over blockers. As a SOLB he mostly needs to contain and take on a FB or OT. He is much better suited to play SOLB and would really be exposed at ILB. His pass coverage abilities are still marginal at best. He will stay at SOLB and will be much better this year than last. At least I hope so because I bought his jersey last season.

i just think it means roth plays on running downs and wake plays on passing downs

I can't be the only one that sees the obvious holes in that line of thinking, can I?

I can just see Peyton Manning Audibling every play Roth is on the field.

Matt Roth LB= Strong side, Taking on Tackle and/or TE, Run Stopper, Takes on Blockers

Wake LB= Weak Side, Pass Rush, opposite TE (strength). Similar to JT who's weakness was when people ran straight at him.

side note... if you put them both together, you get this thing called DeMarcus Ware (sick...)

I think Roth will play a lot better coming in this season after having lost some weight and being more used to the position.

Roth isn't going anywhere, Charlie Anderson is the one who needs to hit the road.

Sigh. Matt Roth is the most irritating player on the team. He's just competent enough and thuggy enough to arm wrestle with a blocker and then race to the pile after it's already formed. Maybe twice per game he'll be left alone and take an angle that happens to smack into the ball carrier, and all of a sudden he's the man crush again. The commentators and camera love him, always content to completely overlook all the plays he's invisible.

This is what I was afraid of, and posted last season. Roth is on the fringe of the replacement list, not a priority. We won't evict him until we're serious about winning something. Best of luck expecting Roth to bloom, at any weight. We've heard that before. I predict slow steps and I love my chances.

There used to be a rule that the guys who I couldn't stand always got demoted or axed before the following season -- Chuck Klingbeil, Larry Chester, Darius Thompson. Roth is a disgusting exception. :badmood:

For one thing, Matt Roth had a true 1.9 yds., point of attack . He had surgery to repair a torn groin, in which he played on thru the whole season. He had surgery the week after the season. Even then they couldn't afford to loose him against the run, they pulled him on most passing situations.
