A lot of the Jests success last year on the ground came from Kevin tying up Zach. I hate hearing about his domination over Zach. Our D last year was built for Thomas not to get touched and make the play. It will be interesting to see the matchup this year, especially when he has a NT in his face with our 3-4!

Maybe Keith "Tractor" Traylor will have some input abput that....

Ya all be happy if we can keep him away from Thomas because he flat out took Thomas out of a ton of plays last year.

Hadn't we lost starting tackles Bowens and Chester for the year prior to playing Jets last year?

I was thinking that same exact thing. Lets see how things roll this time around.

the 3-4 actually exposes your LB's to more lineman. The reason 3-4 linebackers are bigger is because they need to be able to tangle with the offensive line. the 4-3 is designed to sheild your LB's so they can make the tackle. Mawae is good cause he would slip past the tackles and take out zach. there is a lot more bulk on the line this year. D. bowens (260)-Carter (300), zgonina (290)-Traylor(340). between these 2 changes we added 90 pounds to the line.

the biggest reason to play the 3-4 is better pass coverage, and the blitz is much more unpredictable= More effective.

I was telling my those around me at the stadium to watch big 94.

The amazing thing is his quickness for his size. He exploded into the hole on more than one occassion. After only 1 game, IMHO he is better than Chester or Bowens.

Great addition.

One main difference between this coaching regime and the last is that this one actually puts together a game plan to try to expose the other teams weaknesses and to avoid pitfalls of the past. It's well documented how Mawae has dominated Thomas. I can promise you Saban is all over this. He saw what Zach can do last week when he's free to roam. Wanny, Bates and company always went into each game as "vanilla" as could be, thinking they'll be all right based on the talent they have. I was more furious about our lack of using the talent we had on defense during the Wanny era than I was frustrated with our lackluster offense.

That's a long reply, but bottom line, Saban will not let Mawae dominate Thomas on Sunday. Wanny & Bates let this happen every single time they played.

Keith is definitely a good addition, but better than timbo after one game.:shakeno:

This is a different scheme for ZT...the Maewae vs Zach thing won't have the same effect on the D as it did with Wannys D...if the Jests or their fans are thinking that way...oops...sorry...

I've been astonished by Traylor's quickness. Not every play, but when he asks for that extra gear so far it's been there. In terms of initial quickness and upfield burst, Chester is like a plowhorse to Traylor's Seattle Slew. I guess that takes care of my daily quota of knocking Larry Chester. I still can't believe we started that guy.

Traylor played huge in the goal line stands last week. I think he'll squash Kevin Mawae!

Traylor has proven that he is better over his whole career. And he has played longer and sustained it longer as well. Plus he has a ring! I think that would mean that he is better than Timbo. Even though I loved Timbo, he never really showed up in big games and dominated the middle like Traylor has, can, and does!
