We'll never know whether the Dolphins considered JaMarcus Russel franchise QB material. The Raiders apparently did, and the Dolphins didn't feel the same way about Brady Quinn. How do we know this?

If the Dolphins felt confident Quinn was a franchise QB they would have taken him, even if they felt Beck was just as good, since they couldn't guarantee Beck would be available when they picked next. (Note I'm giving the Dolphin's GM and coach credit for not being total idiots).

The big question, however, is whether they felt Beck was a franchise QB when they took him. I'm not saying that he doesn't have the ability to be one, but it seems to me that they could just as easily be taking a chance with him on the off chance he might turn out to be one.

It might also have been a pick to mollify the fan base. I don't claim to be psychic or want credit for his opinion (as I'm sure a lot of others have it), but when Ginn was taken with the 9th pick my immediate thought was "We'd better take that Mormon QB in the 2nd round or Cameron will never get a fair shot with the fanbase."

If this thread doesn't belong in the Dolphin's main talk forum, then neither should any post about any player selected. If I am wrong about this, please explain your reasoning. Otherwise, leave my thread where I put it.

This video has been posted before, but I'll post the link again. Take a very close look at how Beck plays. How he avoids the rush. How he keeps his head while under pressure, and finds the open WR. How he scrambles, allowing his WRs to get open. How he flicks the ball 25 yards into a perfect window for his receivers with almost no effort at all. How quickly the ball comes out once he makes a decision on where to throw it. This guy could be a great NFL QB. No, seriously... a GREAT NFL QB.

It was reported just after the draft that owner Wayne H knew the plan was to skip getting Quinn (even if he was there at #9) and go with Ginn then Beck in the early second.

There were some attempts to trade back into the late first to grab Beck, but no deals were made, and it worked out anyway. There was no panic, or attempt to please the Dolphin fans by grabbing Beck at the last minute.

Whether Beck is really a franchise QB remains to be seen on the field, but clearly Mueller and Cam think he is. I like the fact they had a plan, and went with it, despite the pressure to take Quinn.

From all accounts I've read, the Phins had Ginn rated above Quinn, and Quinn rated just barely above Beck, but felt like the differences were so small between the two QB's that they were better off with QB/WR combination of Ginn/Beck than with combination of Quinn/and a WR other than Ginn.

The Phins needed a QB and drafted one. I hardly think the pick was to mollify the fan base.

GO PHINS~!

Nice find on that vid man. Really gives you a good feel for how accurate Beck is - reminds me of Drew Brees.

I'll express it this way, a #9 overall pick must be someguy how would come in and upgrade your actual roster in that moment.
A later pick will be one of two ways, another guy in the roster but not a serious upgrade, or a developing player who would need time to adjust and improve in order to fortify the roster.
Brady Quinn may have been considered a serious upgrade for us because we have nothing similar at the picking time, but Ted Ginn was evaluated as a playmaker able to improve our WR/KR/PR position.
QB was a must? Yes, but there was nobody ready to start this season under a very complicated offensive system like Cameron's. Beck was the pick because of was Mueller and Cam saw about him and the way they estimated other teams may pick him. they take the risk, evaluating Brady Quinn may fit into our offensive idea after more time than John Beck.
So they picked Ted Ginn and John Beck and only time can show us if this was a smart or stupid selection.

I dont know if i should respond to the post in the main forum or in the draft forum, too many options.

I think the only people in the whole world that new we would pass up on Quinn were Cam, Mueller and Mr. H.

Mueller did say he had Quinn ranked slightly higher than Beck. However, IMO Mueller/Cam understood it doesn't matter what QB they took bc our lack of a play maker at WR would make even a "franchise" QB look bad. What I recall reading was Mueller thought the difference between Quinn and Beck was much smaller than the difference between Ginn and whatever play maker they could have taken with the #40 pick. If Miami had a legitimate play maker at the WR position there is no doubt we would have taken Quinn at #9. This was a pick to upgrade our weakest position on the team (WR).

a lot of people say beck is better than quinn, the phins must have saw something in beck to have him rated as a round 1 pick, watching film the guy looks like a pro qb, he throws the ball on a route before the reciever finishes it and the ball hits him at the right time

he can throw the deep ball, evade the rush and he will stand in the pocket and take a hit to deliver the perfect pass

i like him a lot

have to wait and see

I was never huge on drafting quinn, (check previoius posts), but I was against trading up to get him. I never thought in a million years he would fall in our lap at nine.. I still question whether or not we should have taken him with the ninth overall.

I don't understand how we had ginn rated so high as far as WR's go. I would only hope that we didn't use the ninth overall solely for KR and PR duties. For the second year in a row our first selection is coming off of an injury.

I like ginn don't get me wrong... he is super fast and seems like a great character guy. I hope he works out... and right now I am confident he will. I don't know what is taking so long for his ankle to heal, but I hope he is at least ready for TC....

I also love Beck... I was somewhat surprised when he was still there at 40 but we really lucked out landing him... it was definately a huge need if Cpep doesn't make it back.

back to ginn... I just really have a hard time believing he is the next steve smith... he is quite short and doesn't appear to be real physical so I have to wonder how he will get seperation in the nfl... we can't just run him on fly routes all game long... How well will he block a OLB or a CB or S... all of which could be significantly bigger than him... these are questions we will have to wait for the answers for to see if we made the right move at nine...

if we were set on a WR.... which we may or may not have been... there were a lot of other WR's that could have been looked at...

It seems like everyone in the afc east made a lot of good moves this offseason. we have our work cut out for us thats for sure.

.
ginn was rated the 2nd best WR in the draft across the board and if we did take quinn at 9 the only receiver really worth our top 2nd pick was jarret and we have a player like him in hagan already. so what it comes down to is mueller and cam thought the combo of Ginn/beck was better than Quinn/Jarret.

i looked at the date of this thread and it made me sad, this topic is over with, deal with it in whatever religious belief makes you understand this topic is dead :rolleyes2

agreed Umpalu Ted Ginn is ours like it or not people life goes on, and just for the record i do like the pick, plus why's everyone trying to compare Beck to a Hall of Famer in Dan, just FYI to those that dont know but Dan didnt have a great Def. like we do now or running game back then and had to pass to put us ahead or catch up or just to keep us in the game,as long as Beck just plays within himself well be ok, we dont need him to be Dan Marino, just good enuff to make plays and from what i've seen he can, and has underrated arm strength, and has excellant pocket awareness.
