DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Chris McCain remained at his locker for about an hour after his first NFL contest, still with red eyes from happy tears, still wearing his entire uniform sans for the helmet and cleats.

It had been nearly a year since he played a real game.

And McCain, a Miami Dolphins rookie linebacker, didn't want the feeling to end.

For the Dolphins to get where they want to go this season, rookies are going to have to play a big role and McCain answered the call in Week 1 by helping Miami pull off a 33-20 win over the New England Patriots. On Monday, the Dolphins (1-0) began switching gears and getting ready for a trip to Buffalo (1-0) this weekend.

"After watching the tape and looking at it closely in all three phases, I think there was obviously a lot of good things," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said Monday afternoon.

There were no shortage of players who stood out Sunday. Knowshon Moreno rushed for 134 yards in his Miami debut, Ryan Tannehill threw two touchdown passes and Cameron Wake wreaked plenty of havoc on the outside of the defense. But McCain might have been one of the more unlikely stars, given that he was undrafted and his stock damaged when California kicked him off the team early last season.

He had a punt block to set up Miami's first touchdown, sacked Tom Brady for a 9-yard loss later in the game and was one of the happier guys in an ecstatic locker room when the day was over.

"The people, they know who they are who doubted me," McCain said. "Now they see who I am and who we are as a team."

On Sunday, finally, his future was now.

"Is it mindblowing? Yeah, it is mindblowing. It is mindblowing," McCain said. "A lot of people told me I couldn't be here. ... Getting a sack on him felt good. Blocking a punt felt good. Winning a game felt good. Seeing Cam Wake doing what he do felt good. Everybody was just feeding off energy and I was getting energy from a lot of people."

Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said he expects McCain to remember Sunday's effort "for a long time."

"He's a work in progress," Coyle said. "He's getting better every week. ... It's pretty amazing to be in your first NFL game as an undrafted free agent, first snap, and block a punt."

Eventually, McCain did take that uniform off.

No need to worry. The Dolphins will give him another one to wear this week. His NFL dreams are suddenly very real.

I'm happy with where he can end up. Let's pump the brakes a second on exceptions throughout the season. He is a rookie and will have some mistakes from time to time. Just please don't bring out the pitchforks when that does happen.

It's to bad the entire game was focused on the patriots and there sideline.

I would of liked to seen some of that energy McCain is talking about.

Seeing Brady pouting on the sideline was well worth it.

Just to kind of put things in perspective, Channing Crowder said that McCain is running in circles right now, but that he (Crowder) ran in circles, too, for the first two years.

There's a lot to learn. It's gonna take time, but damn McCain is off to a great start!!

I am more impressed with Jelani Jenkins. Wow that man was playing his ass off!

Crowder's was more of an isosceles triangle. Or maybe a heptagon.

Crowder has been running in circles his whole life. Didn't even know where London is. Pathetic

Channing also said the greats he's been around just do, regardless of their assignment they see it, they go for it, and they make plays. Like McCain on the punt block, apparently McCain said that wasn't what he was supposed to do but he just went for it. I wouldn't be surprised if McCain doesn't even know what he's supposed to be doing when he's out there half the time.

a reporter asked dan marino about 7-8 years into his career "how do you see all this and make these decisions all in a split second and get that ball into places that seem humanly impossible at times. is it just command of the playbook, the scheme? is something that has been coached into you?"......

marino said, "i dunno, i find the guy whos open and throw him the ball". he used to confir with mark clayton all the time on the plays because he didnt have ant real command of the playbook.

and crowder is dead on the money. guys like marino, LT, dexter manley [who couldnt even read] are dumber than a box of rocks but they see it. they feel it. there are guys in every sport who know the playbook inside and out who cant make a play to save their soul's and then you have guys like marino who barely scored on his wonderlick and kids like mccain who were not rhodes scholars or had maturity issues who can just flat out ball.

and i will keep saying it. whatever chris mccain has left to "learn", it needs to be ON the field to correct it. he wont progress on the bench. you put him in a starting lb position RIGHT NOW and by years end he WILL be getting strong droty and or pro bowl consideration.

he just has "it". and we need lots of "it".

There are "athletes" and "scholars"...and then there are "football players". I really think this kid is flat out a "football player".

Watch the game again Moreno was pumped Wallace was slapping wakes pads after his 2nd strip sack team was fired up

Philbin even gave Moreno a fiver after a couple runs

You are right, I thought the team played "together" more so than we have seen in the last 4-5 years. It was a great outing!
